Navigating the Frustration of Losing Your Writing Efforts

Chapter 1 Coping with Lost Writing
Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you’ve invested hours into a piece of writing, only to discover it’s vanished? This can occur for various reasons: a) You mistakenly opened the wrong document, rendering your 800/1,500/2,000 words unusable. b) You were too relaxed or engrossed in your work, leading to a timeout. c) A client unexpectedly rejected your article.
I've experienced all three scenarios multiple times, with the first one hitting me just yesterday. Here’s how I manage the frustration of losing valuable writing time, and I hope you find these strategies beneficial if you encounter similar setbacks.
Reflect on the Situation
When I lose my work, my instinct is often to push the memory aside. However, this doesn’t erase the disappointment; it merely postpones it. Instead, I've learned to confront the reality of the situation. I permit myself to feel upset about the loss, acknowledging that as a stay-at-home parent, a few hours of lost work can significantly disrupt my balance between paid tasks and personal projects.
Understanding that a loss is indeed a loss is crucial.
Finding the Silver Lining
But is it truly just a loss? The next step is to reframe the situation positively. If you believe in the notion that events unfold for a reason, this will come naturally to you. If not, consider the potential benefits from such an experience: a) Improvement in writing skills b) A piece of writing that can be archived for your portfolio c) Clarity on what to improve moving forward
For instance, if you lost work due to distraction, it could serve as a reminder to maintain focus, especially when managing multiple projects that can lead to confusion. If your document timed out, it’s a prompt to be mindful of deadlines. Freelance writing, much like any job, requires adherence to client expectations.
In the event of rejection, it can be an opportunity for growth, highlighting the importance of diligence in your work. Additionally, losing work might signal a need for a break or a change in focus.
I wanted to share these insights for fellow writers who face the discouraging challenge of losing hard-earned work. This process not only allows me to transform a negative experience into a positive one but also encourages me to diversify my writing endeavors.
Bouncing Back Stronger
After a period of reflection and reframing, it’s essential to pick yourself up and move forward. Don’t let the sting of lost work linger. Think of it as a reminder of your resilience and determination to succeed despite setbacks. This metaphor serves to remind you to avoid letting disappointment taint your future writing efforts.
If you don't take the time to properly acknowledge the loss of your work, you risk getting stuck in a cycle of resentment. Engaging in mindful reflection is crucial for moving on without baggage.
Returning to writing sooner rather than later can help you leave the frustration behind.
