# Understanding Why We Repeatedly Make Mistakes

Written on

Chapter 1: The Journey of Self-Discovery

Imagine yourself in a daunting situation. You find yourself enveloped in darkness. As your awareness of your predicament grows, fear sets in—perhaps you panic or call out for assistance. Eventually, you start to reach out, searching for walls to guide your way.

In this moment, you discover a flashlight. Turning it on, you hope to understand your surroundings or find a path to safety. This experience mirrors the journey of self-awareness.

When I first gained insight into my actions, relationships, and belief systems, it felt akin to navigating an unfamiliar terrain. Much like Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, it was as if I was seeing the truth for the first time. Observing my life from a fresh perspective felt like encountering a stranger.

As time passed, I uncovered three vital lessons:

(1) Attention is the Foundation of Self-Awareness Consider this: you commute home after work, following the same route five days a week. Eventually, this journey becomes automatic, and you find yourself zoning out during the drive. Sometimes, you snap back to reality, and other times you don’t.

(2) Awareness Involves Active Participation Many individuals operate on autopilot. To break free from this mindset, you must catch yourself in the act. Awareness entails altering your path and destination. Self-awareness means consciously recognizing your thoughts, behaviors, and emotions.

(3) Awareness Requires Reevaluation I have repeatedly fallen into the same traps due to a lack of awareness. I understand what it feels like to lead an unexamined life, only to meet someone who perceives in you what you fail to see yourself. For years, I believed I knew myself better than anyone, only to realize that I barely knew myself at all. A genuine transformation occurred when I began questioning my actions, thoughts, and beliefs.

In the video titled "The Cognitive Science Behind Repeating Mistakes," experts discuss how our brains are wired to make the same errors, emphasizing the importance of self-awareness in breaking this cycle.

Chapter 2: Embracing Change for Growth

To grow into improved versions of ourselves, we must embrace the evolution that comes with experiences. Simply put, the majority of challenges we face are internal.

Many times, I found myself battling between reality and misconception. To break this cycle, I began researching, journaling, reflecting, and engaging in meaningful conversations with myself.

In "Why You Keep Making the Same Mistakes Over and Over in Your Life," the discussion centers around recognizing patterns and the significance of self-awareness in overcoming repetitive behaviors.

To reclaim my understanding and regain control over my life, I dismantled the foundations of my past self.
