Memorial Day: A Time for Reflection
Memorial Day has long held a special place in my heart as it marks the unofficial beginning of summer. Growing up in Michigan, the arrival of warm weather felt like a seasonal transformation, bringing with it the promise of outdoor activities and fun.
In the past, my Memorial Day weekends were filled with golfing, boating, and enjoying drinks with friends to celebrate the season. Those joyful memories bring a smile to my face, yet as I evolve into a new version of myself, I approach this holiday with a mix of emotions.
A dominant sentiment I experience is nostalgia for the past. My body and lifestyle no longer accommodate late nights of revelry or long days on the water. This change isn't solely physical; it's also a mental shift that no longer aligns with my aspirations.
As I strive to grow in my career, strengthen my marriage, and nurture my relationships, I find that my responsibilities have increased significantly compared to earlier years. Consequently, I must look inward during these extended holiday weekends to determine how I can recharge effectively.
What activities will energize me so that I can contribute my best to my marriage, career, and connections?
This year, I entered the weekend with a sense of loss. My plans did not involve boating, golfing, or visiting local breweries. Instead, I devoted time to painting the deck of our home, enjoying the company of my nieces at our cottage, and taking a leisurely day to catch up on reading.
As I navigate this personal growth journey, I've started to accept this feeling of loss. It’s perfectly normal to grieve the inability to relive certain memories from my youth. Yet, rather than dwell in sadness, I choose to cherish those past experiences—the beautiful memories that shaped my early adulthood.
Furthermore, I have begun to appreciate my current life stage. There are clear reasons why I can no longer partake in the activities I once enjoyed. I am committed to a job that I genuinely care about, which often demands my time and energy. Rather than resorting to alcohol as a means of coping with stress, I’ve discovered healthier alternatives, particularly during long weekends.
I also have a partner with whom I am eager to build a future. This commitment sometimes requires making sacrifices. While day drinking may seem more enjoyable, we are also preparing our home for sale to progress in our shared journey.
These “responsible” choices carry their own significance. Although it’s natural to feel wistful about the “Memorial Day of yesteryear,” it shouldn’t overshadow the present. Instead, I can welcome the path my life is taking.
Investing time in home improvement, spending quality moments with family, and focusing on self-care are all valuable pursuits as I transition into adulthood.
Embracing Change: A New Perspective
I've adopted a mindset that acknowledges my nostalgia while refusing to be held captive by it. I don’t need to mourn what was; instead, I can celebrate what is. As I become more open about these emotions, moving forward becomes easier. I can leave the past behind and fully embrace the present.
