What Exactly is Lab-Grown Meat?

As indicated by its name, lab-grown meat is authentic meat, composed of the same animal cells found in traditional meat products. The distinguishing factor is its production process, which occurs within a meticulously controlled laboratory setting.

Often called cultivated meat, this product is generated by nurturing animal cells in bioreactors, which are stainless-steel vessels designed for cultivation. The process starts with extracting stem cells from a living donor animal. These cells are nurtured under regulated conditions that replicate an animal's natural growth environment. When contemplating animal agriculture, three primary issues emerge: the welfare of animals, the sustainability of farming practices, and the potential for zoonotic diseases, highlighted by the recent pandemic. Lab-grown meat opens doors to real meat consumption without traditional farming methods.

While the industry is still evolving and comprehensive assessments of its carbon footprint and sustainability are premature, it is clear that it has the potential to reduce animal suffering and the risk of disease transmission to humans.
