Embracing Flexibility: The Value of Core Principles Over Rigid Plans

Written on

Understanding the Illusion of Control

It’s often said that planning for the future is essential. This idea resurfaces whenever someone inquires about your 5-year plan. Most people have a go-to response: aiming for a promotion, starting a family, or achieving financial success through writing on platforms like Medium.

However, have you ever reflected on how frequently you achieve your 5-year objectives? Numerous unpredictable factors can shift your trajectory. We may envision our lives as a smooth drive along well-maintained roads, but in reality, we often find ourselves barreling down a steep hill, influenced by luck and chance.

Life can change dramatically in just five years, and it's likely that it will continue to evolve in unforeseen ways.

Rather than restricting my growth with narrow definitions of success, I believe being open to adjusting my plans can yield greater rewards. For instance, what if your supervisor offers you a promotion that clashes with your envisioned career path? Would you accept it? Or consider if your partner receives an opportunity in a different city—would you choose to follow her, even if it means deviating from your plan to become a partner in your firm? Life is inherently unpredictable!

Instead of feeling confined by rigid plans, it’s more beneficial to concentrate on remaining loyal to your core values. Below is a list of the principles that underpin my actions and guide my personal development, regardless of life's unexpected turns.

Core Values to Navigate Life's Journey

  1. Family First: My family is the most significant aspect of my life. If my job or habits negatively affect them, it is my responsibility to make changes.
  2. Sense of Purpose: What motivates me to rise each morning?
  3. Health and Wellness: Prioritizing my health is crucial. I must ensure my own well-being before I can effectively support others—think of it as putting on your own oxygen mask first.
  4. Joyful Moments: Embracing joy is vital; smiling can alleviate many forms of stress and illness. I need to intentionally carve out time for happiness.
Principles that guide personal growth and happiness.

What are your core values? Do they hold more significance than your 5-year plans?
