Avoiding Burnout as a YouTuber: Essential Strategies for Success
Written on
Understanding the YouTube Journey
Transitioning to a full-time YouTube career can be surprisingly overwhelming. Since I embraced this path, I've noticed how quickly my schedule can fill up. Reflecting on my earlier days, I often wonder how I managed to juggle both my YouTube channel and my marketing consultancy. Where did the time for video creation come from? How did I manage to publish a daily blog?
This phenomenon is well explained by Parkinson’s Law, introduced by Cyril Northcote Parkinson in 1955, which states that work expands to fit the time available for its completion. And in my experience, he was absolutely right.
The Busyness of YouTube Life
Now, I find myself busier than ever before. I often work late into the night and rise at 6 AM to get a head start. While I don't plan to maintain this pace indefinitely, it’s a reality during this startup phase of my channel, Mark Ellis Reviews. Yet, despite the long hours, I have managed to avoid burnout. I attribute this to five key strategies that I would like to share.
Strategy 1: Prioritize Exercise
Exercise has always been a part of my life, but its importance has grown significantly. Although I’m no longer a long-distance runner or a football player, I make it a point to work out at least five times a week. My routine combines 5K runs with gym sessions, focusing on a mix of cardio and strength training. Maintaining my physical health is crucial not only for my body but also for keeping my mind sharp. On days I skip a workout, I invariably find myself struggling to stay productive.
Strategy 2: Set Aside Family Time
Becoming a parent has been a transformative experience. Just this morning, while negotiating a sponsorship, my partner brought our child Harrison into the kitchen. The moment I saw his smile, all my stress melted away. This is why carving out family time, even in small doses, is non-negotiable for me in my quest to avoid burnout.
Strategy 3: Diversify Business Interests
I went full-time with Mark Ellis Reviews in March, gradually letting go of previous contracts. It was a difficult decision, but I’ve never looked back. However, I retained one contract that requires me to travel monthly for work. This role involves filming, editing, and podcast hosting with people I enjoy being around. It provides a refreshing break from my YouTube responsibilities and allows me to connect with friends, keeping my work-life balance intact.
Strategy 4: Say No to All-Nighters
You might know someone who prides themselves on pulling an all-nighter to meet a deadline. I’ve tried it myself and can confirm that it's not a smart choice. All-nighters don’t indicate commitment; they suggest poor time management and can lead to burnout. I’ve learned to prioritize sleep over late-night work, and I encourage others to do the same.
Strategy 5: Embrace Holidays
We're finally taking a family holiday that has been postponed since the pandemic, and I can hardly wait. Although I’m working extra hard to prepare, the benefits of taking a break are worth it. Regular holidays are essential for my well-being. Without them, I would risk entering a state of burnout, which I aim to avoid at all costs.
Wrapping Up
Burnout is not a badge of honor; it’s detrimental to your health and career. The five strategies I’ve outlined have been instrumental in helping me navigate my YouTube journey without feeling overwhelmed. If you’re currently battling burnout or are at risk, I hope these tips prove helpful.
