Beyond the Roller Coaster: A Journey to Liberation

Chapter 1: Understanding the Cycle of Life
Are you feeling confined by the unending ups and downs of life? This Buddhist poem delves into the concepts of suffering, awakening, and finding freedom from the chaos.
As I reflect on my experiences, I realize I have witnessed this scene countless times.
Familiar patterns and rhythms seem to repeat endlessly.
Seasons of emotions—joy, sorrow, fear, and anxiety—have come and gone,
All swirling around in a rapid cycle.
I grasp at joy with all my might,
Yet I dread the anger and fear that loom during tough times.
Time and again, I find myself on this exhausting ride,
This relentless roller coaster that never seems to stop.
Worn out and weary, I feel I’ve been trapped in this loop for ages.
I can’t keep going in circles; there must be another path.
Staying on this ride only deepens my despair.
I’m ready for a transformation, ready to take a leap,
It’s time to seek a fundamental shift in perspective.
Thus, I embark on a journey of profound release,
Committing to non-attachment and surrendering to the current.
I practice mindfulness, observing my inner narrative,
Curious about the stories I tell myself about my identity.
I recognize my attachments to the roles I’ve embraced in this life:
Therapist, meditator, daughter, and devoted wife.
Sometimes, I chuckle at this wild, addictive journey,
Noticing how easily we are swept away by the ceaseless tide.
Every moment, my mind is eager to rejoin the ride,
Even when I know, deep down, that it’s an illusion.
So, I practice: being aware as I walk, do laundry, and cook,
Recognizing how often I get ensnared by the narrative’s lure.
But I persist in returning to my present experience,
Taking refuge repeatedly in my breath, my awareness.
Dear universe, dear teachers: guide me on this path,
I am prepared to follow you on this sacred journey today.
My spirit is eager to embrace the end of suffering,
Ready to welcome the profound stillness that 'Nibbana' offers.
Dear universe, dear teachers,
I sense your presence and feel your loving support,
I vow to follow your guidance until my suffering ceases.
And perhaps, one day,
Even the faintest traces of my attachment will dissolve away.
