A Vision Beyond Reality: Embracing the Unconventional

Written on

Chapter 1: The Importance of an Aspirational Vision

A chairperson addressed one of the board members, stating:

– I want to share my thoughts, and I believe many others feel the same way. The strategic vision you are suggesting feels disconnected from reality. I cannot support it.

While the proposed vision may not align closely with current market trends or industry standards, was the chairperson correct? Likely not.

It’s common to think our strategies and visions should be grounded in tangible realities. While we recognize that 'thinking big' and aspiring to make a significant impact can motivate our teams, we often mistakenly believe it shouldn't lead to unrealistic expectations.

Let’s consider this from a fresh perspective. While a vision may seem 'disconnected from reality,' it doesn’t automatically imply that the team is thinking excessively grand. Instead, it could reflect a focus on concepts that don’t yet exist, making them appear implausible.

During strategic workshops or retreats, I purposely encourage teams to step away from conventional realities for a while. When a vision is overly tethered to current circumstances, it rarely possesses the ambition needed to disrupt the status quo.

Building a transformative strategy on such a constrained vision is challenging. If our strategy relies on quantifiable metrics and analysis, it typically leads to developing ideas that already exist.

Consider the likes of Airbnb, Amazon, Facebook, and Uber; these disruptive innovations transformed their industries not through rigorous data validation but by imagining possibilities that were once unthinkable.

We must shift our mindset toward creating what has never been conceived before. This doesn't imply that our vision should be fanciful; rather, we should have faith in our ability to bring it to fruition.

A strategy that feels 'detached from reality' doesn't automatically equate to failure.
