Understanding Top Writers on Medium
Medium is an inclusive platform designed for everyone to express their creativity and share content on any topic. However, being a skilled writer involves more than just grammar and vocabulary — many of us still grapple with concepts like syntax.
Identifying what makes a “great writer” can be subjective. For this discussion, I define a Top Writer as someone who has amassed a substantial following, often ranging from tens of thousands to even hundreds of thousands. Their articles frequently receive recommendations, making them prominent figures on your “for you” page, and they consistently produce trending content in their niches.
In my experience on Medium, I’ve noticed three defining traits of Top Writers:
- Consistency in Writing
These writers not only hone their craft but also cultivate their audience through a consistent writing schedule. Their followers come to expect regular content, whether daily or weekly, which demonstrates the writers' commitment to their craft.
- Providing Value to Readers
Top Writers understand the importance of delivering valuable content. Whether they specialize in a niche subject, possess expertise in a specific field, or simply aim to entertain and enlighten their audience, they conduct thorough research to ensure their writings resonate with readers.
- Engagement with the Community
It may surprise you, but these writers are among the most engaged members of the Medium community. They actively connect with their audience and the broader platform, reading others' stories, offering claps, and leaving comments to motivate fellow writers. They also share their articles in various publications, enhancing their reach.
Top Writers contribute significantly to the platform and its diverse readership. The good news is that anyone can aspire to become a Top Writer by embracing these essential traits.
What about you? Which of these qualities are you implementing in your writing journey today?
