Revamped Desk Setup: A 2022 Overview for Enhanced Productivity
Written on
Chapter 1: My Updated Workspace
Last year, I showcased my desk setup, detailing the essential products I use daily. Since then, I’ve made several improvements. Noteworthy changes include a new laptop, elevated monitors, a focus on ergonomics, and the creation of a workspace that fosters productivity.
While the items I've acquired have worked wonders for me, they may not suit everyone. I'll provide links to the products, but I encourage you to share any tools you’ve discovered that enhance your work experience. Let’s dive in!
Section 1.1: Core Equipment
At the heart of my setup is my computer. Recently, I’ve delved into video and photo editing, alongside developing mobile and web applications. These new responsibilities necessitated an upgrade, and I opted for a powerhouse.
I now use the 2021 MacBook Pro, equipped with an M1 Max processor, 32 GB of RAM, and a 1 TB SSD. While this might be more than I need, it was an excellent deal, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed using it. The speed has transformed my workflow, and the impressive battery life coupled with the 16-inch display is a delight.
For most users, I’d recommend the M1 Pro unless you’re engaged in intensive video tasks. The entire M1 (and now M2) chip range indicates a bright future for the Mac ecosystem.
One of my key accessories is a laptop riser, which elevates my MacBook to align with my monitor arms. This is particularly beneficial for presentations, as I am quite tall (6' 8"), making it uncomfortable to look down.
Section 1.2: Additional Devices
Alongside my MacBook, I also appreciate having an iPad. Although I enjoy the large display of my MacBook Pro, its size makes it less portable. The iPad serves as a lightweight alternative for note-taking, entertainment, and more.
For input, I’ve addressed wrist pain by incorporating ergonomic accessories. Currently, I’m using the Logitech Ergo keyboard and MX Vertical mouse, both of which have improved my comfort significantly. The MX Vertical is fantastic, but if you prefer a more traditional option, consider the MX Master. For a budget-friendly vertical mouse, the Logitech Lift is a great alternative.
Chapter 2: Power and Data Management
For power accessories, the Anker Nano USB-C charger is compact and perfect for travel. I primarily use it with a MagSafe charger for quick iPhone charging, but I plan to upgrade to a more permanent solution soon.
All devices connect to my computer via a single Thunderbolt cable through the CalDigit TS3, which is essential for managing power and data. Although it’s on the pricier side, it’s worth it for the convenience it offers.
For backups, I rely on a Seagate hard drive along with macOS's Time Machine. For video projects, I use SanDisk portable SSDs to keep files organized and manageable.
Chapter 3: Audio and Visual Setup
For audio, I typically use my AirPods Pro, which are excellent. I also have a pair of Sony headphones for variety. The MacBook Pro's speakers are impressive, but I aim to invest in external speakers for better sound quality in the future.
For video conferencing, I have a basic Logitech webcam that pairs well with Logi Capture software for screencasting. While I’m also testing an Elgato Facecam, the Logitech remains my favorite for its affordability and performance.
My microphone setup includes a Logitech Blue Yeti X on a standard stand, delivering fantastic sound quality. Blue microphones are a solid choice for beginners, and I recommend exploring options from Elgato and Rode as well.
Chapter 4: Personal Touches
Finally, I have a few unique items on my desk. The Oasis magnetic desk organizer, a thoughtful gift from my wife, allows for customizable arrangements that fit my setup perfectly. I also use Pilot G2 pens—classics for a reason—and a selection of water bottles, with my new Thermoflasks being particularly effective.
In my workspace, a cozy couch has become a sanctuary for reading and reflection. Recently, I’ve been inspired by "Building a Second Brain" by Tiago Forte, which offers valuable insights into project management and knowledge organization.

As you can see, working from home has motivated me to create a space that I genuinely enjoy. Everyone has unique workflows and preferences, so I’m not suggesting this is the only way to arrange your area, but I truly value all the products mentioned here.
I’d love to hear your feedback on my setup and any tools you recommend!
