Chapter 1 Understanding Flawed Mindsets

In a recent experience while exercising, I tuned into a YouTube video where the host discussed popular games he personally disliked. His main grievance regarding a widely-loved Action RPG was the difficulty he faced in solving quests, which he found frustratingly obscure. This sentiment serves as a powerful metaphor for our attitudes towards creativity and entrepreneurship.

Investing our blood, sweat, and tears into our artistic endeavors or business ventures only to face criticism upon release can be disheartening. For instance, I recently shared an excerpt from my upcoming book with a friend, who wasn't fond of my writing style. This feedback taught me two crucial lessons: 1) When sharing my work with those unfamiliar with my style, it's wise to present only the standout pieces, and 2) Some individuals may not grasp the value of sharing unfinished work with an audience.

Many prioritize perfection over timely delivery, and they may never bring their ideas to fruition. Hiding behind the notion of perfectionism is often more comfortable than facing criticism and rejection. This isn't about right or wrong; it's simply a different way of thinking.

It's essential to recognize that the journey of creativity and business is rarely straightforward. You might be aware of the value of what you have to offer, supported by accolades and testimonials. Yet, there will always be dissenters.

Some challenges can be incredibly tough to navigate. On your path to success, you may encounter various personal and financial obstacles. However, if you can learn from these challenges, you can devise a strategy to overcome them and enhance your skills.

If you decide to abandon your creative pursuits simply because they are challenging, you're facing a mindset dilemma. Instead of focusing on improving your art or product, your primary goal should be to elevate your mindset.

While I recognize that the journey can be frustrating at times, it's also important to note that a lack of challenges can lead to boredom. We need obstacles to strive against.

Don't exit the game simply because it's difficult. Instead, consider stepping away only when you realize you're not inclined to excel, as Seth Godin discusses in his book, "The Dip." Quitting just because the journey is tough means leaving opportunities behind.
