Microsoft's Acquisition of Bethesda: A Gamer's Dilemma

The Evolution of Console Wars
Gaming has always been a significant part of my life, providing an escape from reality. In the last console generation, I found myself buying all three major systems, along with a decent PC. The thrill of gaming has helped me cope with various challenges.
As a gamer, I’ve often engaged in lively debates over which console is superior—discussions about performance, noise levels, and controller comfort. Most of the time, these conversations were light-hearted, driven more by enthusiasm than facts. However, one topic that consistently sparked passionate discussions was the quality of exclusive titles.
In these debates, the Xbox team would tout titles like Halo and Gears of War, while PlayStation fans countered with Final Fantasy and Uncharted. Each group proudly defended their library, often reminding the other of the games they were missing out on. Meanwhile, PC gamers would chime in, suggesting that everyone should just switch to PC gaming.
While I enjoyed these discussions, my primary passion was simply the games themselves. Video games are unique in that they require players to master mechanics to progress through the story, allowing for a deeper level of immersion.
However, as I grow older and take on more responsibilities—such as family and career—I find myself with less time to devote to gaming. This shift has forced me to reevaluate my priorities, especially with new consoles on the horizon. I now face the sobering realization that I might only purchase one system this generation.
Each day, I must make decisions about how to spend my limited free time, making the choice of console even more significant. As a child, I could only have one system, and I chose the PlayStation for its extensive game library. Now, as an adult, justifying the purchase of multiple consoles feels impossible. I understand the motivations of companies vying for my attention, even if I don't always agree with their tactics.
The importance of intellectual property has become increasingly clear across the entertainment industry. Companies will go to great lengths to secure a single great idea, as it can offer them a competitive edge.
Thus, Microsoft's acquisition of Bethesda isn't entirely shocking, but it is frustrating. Gamers desire to play outstanding titles with friends, regardless of their chosen platform. In recent years, the industry seemed to be heading toward this ideal, with the advent of crossplay in major titles. The frustration of not being able to engage in a conversation simply because of console exclusivity is disheartening.
With Bethesda now under Microsoft's banner, the divide in the gaming community appears to widen as companies scramble for our attention. I had hoped we were moving past these divisions, uniting as a community of gamers.
As Sony continues to release exclusive titles while Microsoft seeks to dominate the market, I can’t help but wish for the opportunity to enjoy great games crafted by passionate developers—sharing this beloved hobby with my young son without the barriers of exclusivity.
I suppose there can only be one "ring to rule them all."
