Exploring the Best Side Hustles for Those Over 50

As someone who identifies more as a business owner than a traditional writer, my aim has always been to build a successful venture that generates seven figures annually. However, my journey began with a variety of side hustles, each offering different degrees of success. Here are five of the most promising options for individuals aged 50 and above.

1. Tutoring

Tutoring stands out as one of the most rewarding side hustles I've tried. It was simple to initiate, provided decent compensation, and offered immense satisfaction in helping younger individuals achieve their academic goals. Older adults possess a wealth of knowledge from their professional experiences, making it easy to tutor subjects like communication, economics, and history.

You can find tutoring opportunities on popular job platforms such as Indeed, SimplyHired, and Care.com. For those interested in online tutoring, websites like Tutors.com, VarsityTutors.com, and Skooli are excellent options. Additionally, you can assist international students in learning English through sites like VIPKid.

2. Coaching

Coaching, similar to tutoring, helps individuals enhance their personal and professional lives. The main difference lies in the approach; as a coach, I encourage clients to find their own solutions while holding them accountable for their progress. This contrasts with tutoring, where I typically provide direct answers.

Many coaches operate independently, allowing for a flexible schedule. To stand out in this field, it's beneficial to specialize in a particular area. For more insights on coaching, consider exploring the International Coach Federation, a leading organization for independent coaches.

3. Landlording

Landlording has proven to be the most lucrative side hustle I've engaged in. It does require significant financial investment, especially if you're not considering renting out a room in your home. I initially started by renting a room as a short-term rental, which was profitable but uncomfortable for me.

I then transitioned to managing rental properties. Currently, I have one inherited property, but I see great potential as I expand my portfolio. If you're an empty nester with extra space, renting can be a straightforward way to earn additional income. For more information on becoming a landlord, check out Landlord Studio.

4. Selling Items Online

I've dabbled in selling items on platforms like eBay, Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, and Poshmark. While I didn't fully commit, I recognize the potential for profit. Succeeding in this venture requires strong marketing skills, including branding, product descriptions, and photography.

If you want to turn this into a viable side hustle, you'll need to consistently source products and manage inventory. Selling used items, from furniture to collectibles, can generate extra cash, and you could even offer this service for others while earning a commission.

5. Content Development

I’m just starting my journey in content development, and it's both exciting and promising. If you have a creative streak and enjoy sharing ideas, this might be the perfect fit. The first step is to determine your area of expertise or passion. It's advisable to focus on a single topic to establish yourself as an authority.

Decide how you want to share your knowledge—whether through writing, podcasting, or creating videos. Choose a medium that resonates with you. If you prefer not to be on camera, consider producing engaging faceless videos.

Final Thoughts

Reaching the age of 50 no longer signifies a decline in one's career or life. Today, older adults have greater control over their professional and financial futures. All it takes is the willingness to step outside your comfort zone and try something new.
