Why You Should Focus on Your Passion, Not Earnings on Medium

Chapter 1: The Pressure to Write About Earnings
Many writers, particularly those who are just starting out, feel a strong urge to share their earnings from Medium.
While stories about earnings often attract more attention, many writers hesitate to contribute to this discussion. This reluctance can stem from a sense of discomfort or the fear of clickbait.
When I first attempted to write about my earnings, I found myself uneasy for a couple of reasons. Firstly, my acquaintances can easily access my Medium profile, and I prefer to keep my financial details private. Living in an area where kidnapping is a risk further complicates matters; I certainly don’t want my earnings to be used against me. Although I eventually wrote that piece, it didn't resonate with readers, teaching me a crucial lesson: writing that lacks authenticity is rarely successful.
Section 1.1: The Unsustainable Nature of Earnings Writing
Writing about earnings on Medium can be a precarious path, particularly for newcomers. As engagement levels rise, new writers may become overly enthusiastic and churn out more posts centered around Medium itself. This often leads to neglecting their original topics.
The downside? Their new followers are often solely interested in financial stories, leading to a lack of engagement when the writer returns to their usual subjects. Additionally, the writing community is full of versatile voices; there will always be someone who can articulate ideas differently. Over time, I've witnessed various new writers gain initial popularity only to fade away, often due to a lack of originality in their content.
Subsection 1.1.1: Finding Your True Niche
No one joins Medium to solely discuss Medium. We all have unique niches, whether it's self-improvement, health, relationships, or others. While focusing on your niche may seem like a slower route to success, it’s ultimately more sustainable. This approach allows you to cultivate an audience that genuinely connects with you.
Chapter 2: Writing From the Heart
So, should you write about Medium? It depends on what truly resonates with you. Everyone is drawn to engaging stories about earnings, but not everyone has the experience or interest to write them. A recent masterclass by Tim Denning reinforced a vital point: exceptional writing stems from beliefs rather than mere ideas or opinions.
My initial story about earnings failed to connect because I lacked conviction in what I was expressing. Authentic beliefs, when translated from thought to emotion, create a deeper connection with your audience.
What do you genuinely think about Medium? Reflecting on your experiences can open up a wealth of topics beyond earnings. Consider writing about:
- The platform itself (its interface, the app)
- Your emotional journey while using Medium
- Personal growth through the platform
- Community-building experiences on Medium
- Recent updates and features
Your next story idea might come from simple observations as you engage with the platform.
Final Thoughts
When you joined Medium, you likely had goals in mind. While those goals can evolve, it’s essential to remain true to your purpose. The pressure to conform should never overshadow your core beliefs. Whether you choose to write about Medium or another niche, always strive to:
- Share thoughts that flow naturally from you
- Stay loyal to your beliefs
If you're looking for inspiration, I encourage you to explore my other stories on Medium that steer clear of earnings.
