Enhancing Korean Vocabulary through Duolingo and Consistency

Chapter 1: My Journey into Korean Language Learning
My adventure into learning Korean began, much like many others, sparked by my fascination with South Korean dramas and the vibrant world of K-pop. As I started to grasp a few words while watching these shows, my curiosity intensified. I decided to revisit my neglected Duolingo account and enrolled in the Korean course.
The app quickly became a favorite of mine. It’s enjoyable and allows me to immerse myself in the language at a comfortable pace while introducing new vocabulary. Although I don’t believe that fluency can be achieved solely through Duolingo, it certainly provides an excellent method for gradually connecting with the language.
What My Duolingo Routine Looks Like
My practice is typically divided into two segments throughout the day. I treat the app like a game (currently competing in the Diamond League). In the morning, I tackle one or two new lessons, jotting down everything — both the English and Korean translations. I rewrite new words and sentences until I earn the first two crowns for each lesson.
For those who rise early, there's a bonus: 15 minutes of double points after 6 PM that same day. Therefore, I often return to the app between dinner and bedtime. During this evening session, my approach varies slightly. This is when I focus on restoring any cracked eggs from lessons I’ve completed previously. I also work on other lessons to advance from basic crowns to legendary crowns.
At the conclusion of each lesson, I compile a concise list of unfamiliar words and those I’ve learned but still struggle with.
A Valuable Life Lesson
Duolingo has taught me to be gentler with myself when it comes to developing skills and making small habit changes. In the past, if I missed a day, I would be quite hard on myself, even if it wasn’t due to a lack of effort. The app’s concept of a streak freeze has significantly shifted my perspective. This feature allows me to miss a day or two without losing my streak, keeping me on track even after an absence.
Currently, I am proud to say my Duolingo streak stands at 103 days, despite having missed 13 days throughout this period. I find this approach useful in applying the same principles to other habits I’m working to establish.
