Empowering Spiritual Growth Through Simple Requests for Help

Chapter 1: Finding Clarity in Chaos
Throughout my journey, I have encountered various challenges that, despite often feeling happy and free, occasionally disrupt my peace. Frustration, indecision, and even physical discomfort can unexpectedly arise, complicating my human experience.
While I have absorbed much advice since joining Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), there are moments when this guidance becomes elusive, particularly in stressful situations. During these times, I often struggle to recall the Serenity Prayer or effectively apply the AA 3rd Step principles. A wise sponsor once encouraged me to simplify my approach by simply uttering, “God Help Me.”
This straightforward plea has proven transformative. When I reach out with those words, I genuinely feel a connection and support. Though it may require some practice to become a habitual response, the benefits are undeniably rewarding.
My addictive tendencies extend beyond substances; I seek pleasure in various forms. If there’s a plate of cookies or a gallon of ice cream within reach, my self-control diminishes. Even the thought of a miraculous pill that would eliminate my alcoholism tempts me to wonder about the effects of taking more than one.
As I began to consistently invoke “God Help Me,” I noticed a shift. Each request became a gateway to relief, leading me to ask for divine assistance in numerous situations: “God help me navigate this road safely,” or “God help me respond wisely to this child in distress.” This practice evolved, and soon I found myself expressing gratitude with, “Thank you, God,” after experiencing positive outcomes.
My daily life now resonates with more expressions of gratitude than pleas for help. By fostering this mindset, I can actively engage with my recovery journey around the clock, rather than limiting it to specific settings like meetings or church. Rather than searching for the next right action, it often presents itself naturally.
This leads me to ponder how to discern between my will and God’s will. If I feel at peace, it’s likely in alignment with divine guidance; if I sense any hesitation, it’s a cue to pause and reflect. This approach simplifies a complex existence for someone like me.
By embracing this practice, my life flourishes with happiness, joy, and freedom. Although not every day is filled with laughter, I find contentment in knowing I have stepped away from chaos. I feel joyful as I manage challenges effectively and liberated from the grip of substances.
Ultimately, all of this stems from a simple invocation: “God Help Me.” By allowing the divine to guide my path and stepping aside, I find peace. Thank you, God!
