Embracing Independent Writing: A Shift from Medium Publications
Written on
Chapter 1: Breaking Free from Constraints
In my journey as a writer, I've come to realize that my focus on Medium publications is diminishing. It's time to embrace the joy of solo writing.
Often, I felt boxed in by the limitations of publications. While I have a wealth of ideas, insights, and advice to share, they don't always align with the specific themes of various publications. Have you ever encountered challenges defined by specific genres? One day it’s about sleep, the next health, followed by cooking or managing finances. Life doesn't function that way, right? We juggle multiple responsibilities daily.
Medium publications do foster wonderful communities filled with like-minded individuals, which I genuinely appreciate. However, consider this: if you belong to a travel publication, you might only hear about travel tips and experiences. But does that mean readers are uninterested in book recommendations for their travels, budgeting advice for trips, or smart investing strategies while on the go?

I once joined a women-focused publication that published my initial article on health. However, when I submitted a piece addressing how women sometimes undermine one another and the importance of uplifting each other, it was turned down. While publications have their merits, I found it challenging to write on personal finance without a suitable platform. Launching my own publication with a small following didn’t seem viable either.
Life is rife with limitations—financial, societal, and emotional. I refuse to let the constraints imposed by Medium publications hinder my journey. My initial motivation for writing on Medium stemmed from a passion for expressing my thoughts. I believe everyone has a unique story to tell, shaped by diverse experiences and emotions. Consider the complexity of feeling irritated by someone yet choosing to respond with kindness. Is that even a valid emotion? Each writer has a distinct style; there is no singular correct approach.
One significant benefit of stepping away from publications is the elimination of waiting days or even hours for acceptance of my work.
I've decided to dedicate more time to solo writing, free from the confines of specific publications. This transition will allow me to express my varied thoughts and experiences on a multitude of subjects—from personal finance and business management to study strategies, health, sleep, food, and more. Each post will embody my commitment to growth and problem-solving, grounded in a positive outlook.
Here's to countless more stories and connections.
Cheers,
Sejal
