Imagen generates images from text prompts, while MusicLM composes melodies based on user input. PaLM is another Large Language Model boasting three times the parameters of ChatGPT, hinting at a future with specialized chatbots tailored for different applications.

Google's introduction of Bard was relatively understated, relying on a simple tweet and blog post. In stark contrast, Microsoft showcased a live demonstration, conducted interviews, and opened up Bing to a select group of users.

“Microsoft launched the waitlist for its Bing AI preview last week, and within 48 hours, 1 million individuals had signed up,” reported The Verge. The company is trialing the Bing AI service across 169 countries, prioritizing users who set Bing and Edge as their default search engine and browser.

Two weeks after the launch of ChatGPT, Pichai declared a “Code Red,” signaling the company’s uncertainty regarding OpenAI’s developments. The urgency became even more apparent when Google enlisted the help of its founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, to strategize a counteraction.

However, it wasn’t until the Bard demonstration that Google’s missteps became glaringly obvious. In a video shared by Pichai, Bard made a critical error, mistakenly attributing the first image of an exoplanet to the James Webb Space Telescope when, in fact, the credit belonged to the Very Large Telescope. Whether it's Bing, Bard, or Sydney, each product grapples with inherent challenges. Language Models, as I often reiterate, lack comprehension. They generate responses by piecing together words based on linguistic patterns, resulting in answers that may seem coherent but are devoid of true understanding.

As these models possess no moral compass, they are susceptible to misuse by malicious actors aiming to flood the internet with misinformation. Even well-intentioned individuals can inadvertently disseminate inaccurate information. This has already transpired with CNET, a major U.S. publication, which published numerous finance-related articles riddled with errors. The failure to catch these mistakes was partially due to automation bias, where human editors overly relied on algorithms, assuming they couldn’t err.

Envision the ramifications of this phenomenon magnified across countless individuals generating content daily. While humans have always produced erroneous articles and comments, we are limited by our physical capabilities. With accessible Language Models, anyone with a power source can create a never-ending stream of content.

Proponents of Language Models often dismiss these concerns, suggesting that implementing safeguards against harmful content and flagging AI-generated articles would suffice. “Just establish guardrails and filters for fact-checking!” they propose.

Privacy: individuals need to safeguard their personal data from being exploited by the Language Models powering future search engines.

Complacency: users must resist the urge to overly rely on search queries.

Copyright and plagiarism: for those running online businesses or blogs, new search engines may utilize their content without consent and fail to redirect users to their sites.

Manipulation and abuse: users face the risk of bad actors leveraging Language Models to create convincing disinformation, potentially harming reputations.

Bias and unfairness: users must contend with biases stemming from the data used to train Language Models, particularly affecting underrepresented groups.

Regulatory and legal risks: users will need to navigate regulatory and legal challenges related to intellectual property, data protection, and discrimination.

Unknown unknowns: users will confront unforeseen consequences. The Sydney incident exemplified this, and there’s no reason to believe others won’t arise.

Big Tech’s current strategy appears to be offloading these challenges onto users. Microsoft, followed by Google, will persist in releasing their products and hoping for favorable outcomes. The Chatbot Dilemma: Unleashing Potential Hazards
