Unlocking the Power of Sleep: A Simple Life Hack for Better Living

Written on

Chapter 1: The Revelation of Sleep

I've stumbled upon a transformative life hack that anyone can adopt. While you might already be familiar with this concept, you may not be utilizing it to its full potential. I’ll admit, I've neglected this simple yet powerful tool, despite understanding its importance.

This realization came after I experienced a month-long illness. After two years of consistently wearing a mask, I decided to remove it. I don’t work in shared spaces, nor do I often find myself in crowded areas, but despite this, I caught two colds in quick succession. It felt akin to being a kindergarten teacher surrounded by kids who haven’t yet learned to cover their sneezes.

To recover from these colds, I needed ample rest—between twelve to fourteen hours each night until the worst symptoms subsided. Even after that, I found myself craving more sleep. Typically, I’d manage six to seven hours a night, but I've never been a morning person; I always just believed that mornings weren't for me.

However, my illness opened my eyes to what I had been missing.

My newfound life hack? Prioritizing more sleep.

Does that sound overly simplistic?

Before I fell ill, I often settled for less than my usual hours, believing I could compensate over the weekend. Yet, enduring back-to-back colds pushed me to seek additional rest, even after I began feeling better. Coupled with the stress of the season at work, I felt utterly drained.

I decided to increase my nightly sleep to a minimum of eight hours, and sometimes even more. Now that I’ve recovered, I’m astounded by how significant this change has been for my daily life.

  1. I wake up feeling refreshed.

This is an obvious benefit. Sure, I could choose to stay up late and sleep in, but that would just lead to lateness for work.

  2. My productivity has surged, especially in the mornings.

(Remember the slow starter I used to be?) I maintain my usual wake-up time (no more snooze button for me), enjoy my coffee and breakfast leisurely, publish an essay on Twitter, and still manage to leave early for work!

Arriving early might not be everyone's ideal use of free time, but I genuinely enjoy my work. The quiet hours allow me to organize my thoughts without interruptions or I can engage in relaxed chats with colleagues I rarely encounter.

If that doesn’t appeal to you, use that extra time for something enjoyable—read, exercise, write, or connect with a loved one.

  1. Interestingly, despite sleeping more and having fewer waking hours, I find I’m achieving as much—if not more—each day.

I know what you might be thinking, “Isn’t that similar to point one?” No, it’s different. I now have enough energy to sustain me throughout the day without experiencing that dreaded afternoon slump. Each evening, I review my to-do list and feel satisfied with my accomplishments.

  2. I experience reduced stress levels, even with the same stressors lingering.

The frantic sensation of always being behind has vanished. I’m calmer, my thinking is clearer, and I manage stress more effectively.

I’m committed to incorporating eight to nine hours of sleep into my daily routine. If I adhere to this new pattern, it will soon become a habit—if it isn’t already.

You may not require quite as many hours; what’s essential is finding consistent sleep that works for you. I’ve maintained my wake-up time while adjusting my bedtime to ensure I get sufficient rest.

Of course, life can disrupt our routines—families, illnesses, and emergencies are all part of life. Consistency is key for any habit to stick, and if you miss a night, it's crucial to start again.

But tonight, I won’t be missing out on sleep. Until tomorrow...
