Unlocking Health: Why Discipline Isn't the Key to Success
Written on
Chapter 1: The Limits of Discipline
It's a hard truth, but you'll never truly improve your health simply through discipline. Our genetic makeup works against us in this regard.
Our primal instincts, deeply rooted in survival, dictate our actions. When your blood sugar levels drop, your body instinctively urges you to eat whatever is nearby without a second thought. This mechanism was crucial for our survival over millennia, allowing us to reach this moment in history. However, in today's world, it poses a significant threat to our health.
It's important to recognize that this is not a failure of your brain. It simply hasn't adapted to the abundance of food available today. Unlike in the past, when we had to hunt for every meal and our food sources were inherently healthy and low in calories, our modern diets are filled with processed, unhealthy options. The drop in blood sugar used to signal the need to hunt but now merely prompts us to raid the fridge.
To counteract these instincts, consider implementing a few straightforward strategies:
- Eliminate junk food purchases so that when cravings strike, you won't have easy access to unhealthy options.
- Plan your meals in advance to avoid impulsive, poor choices.
- Ensure you get enough sleep, as fatigue can heighten cravings for unhealthy snacks.
- Avoid shopping while hungry to reduce temptation.
- Incorporate daily exercise into your routine. Personally, I find that after a workout, I am more inclined to choose nutritious foods, as indulging in junk feels like a waste of effort.
