Unleashing the Magic Within: Embracing Your Body and Mind

Written on

Chapter 1: The Body's Hidden Magic

In recent times, I caught a glimpse of the film "Benedetta." You may have encountered its trailer; it narrates the story of a nun who experiences divine visions while engaging intimately with another nun. During that era, Christianity preached a doctrine of bodily denial, leading to the persecution of individuals, including sex workers and scientists—both seen as overly preoccupied with the physical realm.

This raises a question: why do many individuals in 2022 still perceive their bodies as shameful? A significant number of us are so entrenched in our thoughts that we’ve disconnected from our bodily sensations since our teenage years. Paradoxically, body dysmorphia rates are soaring. Is there a way to change this?

Your Body Is a Vessel of Magic

In one of the film's early scenes, a character is told that her body is merely a source of trouble. Subsequently, a statue of Mary falls on her, leading her to symbolically suckle from it. This moment encapsulates a profound message.

According to her elder, the aim should be to transcend to the spiritual realm, where true goodness resides. The body, in this context, is merely a burden—a weight holding back the spirit. To be fair, this sentiment resonates with Buddhist philosophies, which also view the physical world as an illusion.

During the time of Benedetta, alchemists were unique in recognizing the enchantment present in the material world. Unfortunately, their pursuits often led to excommunication or even execution. It’s worth noting that Newton, who unveiled the laws of gravity, was also an alchemist.

The fascination with the physical world was often dismissed as heretical by those who saw themselves as spiritually enlightened. However, their reactions can be understood in the context of their time, a period rife with greed, disease, and moral failings. The world of contemplation was the favored path for those seeking divine connection. Sound familiar?

For me, this echoes the sentiments of certain spiritual seekers today—often battling personal issues. One must acknowledge the reality behind these perspectives.

Science: The Legacy of Alchemy

Out of alchemical dreams emerged the birth of modern science. This pursuit stems from the belief that understanding the material world is inherently valuable. Without this foundational belief, the exploration of nature might seem pointless.

Consider this: if I were to suggest that you could become a hero by counting every grain of rice in your pantry, would you find that compelling? Probably not. Yet, there are dedicated individuals who spend their lives cataloging countless variations of the same worm species, a pursuit we now celebrate and financially support. What drives this motivation?

A Reverence for Science

Jaak Panksepp, a renowned neuroscientist, invested substantial taxpayer funds to discover that rats are capable of laughter. At first glance, it seems absurd. Yet, this finding enabled him to identify seven primary emotional circuits in the brain—fear, care, panic, and play—laying the groundwork for our current understanding of human emotions.

Panksepp’s work contributes to the alchemical vision that understanding the material world leads to salvation. This notion has only been solidified by advancements in technology and science, reinforcing our belief in their magic. As science continues to yield remarkable discoveries, our reverence for it grows, compelling us to offer up our resources.

Over time, alchemists evolved into modern scientists, becoming the wizards of our material existence. Yet, many have lost sight of the dreams that originally inspired their work.

The Importance of Remembering Alchemical Dreams

About a century after the transformation from alchemy to science, many began to dismiss the dream. Atheistic scientists declared religion obsolete, asserting that science alone represents truth. This perspective may hold some validity, yet we must remember that the alchemical dream—more akin to a spiritual version of science—provides the motivation necessary for action.

Scottish philosopher David Hume famously stated, “You can’t derive an ought from an is.” In essence, facts alone cannot dictate our actions; they require interpretation and meaning. Without a guiding dream, we risk being adrift amidst an infinite sea of facts.

The Consequences of Losing Our Collective Dream

As science increasingly dominates, we risk losing the dream that unites us. Nietzsche’s proclamation in 1882, “God is dead. And we have killed him. And there will never be enough water to wash away the blood,” predicted a societal upheaval following the demise of traditional beliefs. The 20th century bore witness to the ramifications of this disconnection.

How to Become a Dream Weaver

We are in urgent need of new dreams. Our present is characterized by chaos and a quest for meaning. It’s time for new dream weavers to emerge.

Reflecting on my childhood, I recall the magic I felt while reading "Harry Potter." The truth is, that magic is within reach for all of us. However, the journey to becoming a skilled magician requires dedication and practice.

Our preoccupation with the material world has granted us remarkable advancements—such as abundant food and technology—yet many of us perceive our lives as monotonous and uninspired. The truth is, we possess untapped potential, but fear often holds us back.

With the right mindset, we can reshape the collective dream into a more unified vision. Each of us has the power to be transformative, akin to the “chosen one” archetype we admire in stories.

With a few keystrokes, I can craft a dream that resonates with millions, inspiring us to elevate ourselves. The power inherent in storytelling is staggering.

Indeed, casting spells that yield real change is challenging. It demands a deep understanding of cultural narratives, mastery of language, and the ability to communicate compelling alternatives. This process requires years of practice and a certain instinct.

Finding an agent or mentor can feel akin to being a young wizard, awestruck by the mastery of seasoned sorcerers. It’s natural to feel frustrated when progress seems slow, but we must recognize that the adventure of life is about discovering our own magic.

Remember, casting spells isn't solely about words; it's about presence and embodiment.

A Vision for the Future

Here’s a dream you can adopt: become the wizard destined to transform the world. Engage in reading and writing more; think critically and exercise regularly. Be unflinchingly honest with yourself.

Yes, while the limitations of our human form can feel confining, they also make the journey worthwhile. What legacy will you create from this experience?

Thank you for joining me on this exploration!

As some of you may have noticed, my recent posts have drawn inspiration from the album "Neon Bible" by Arcade Fire. This particular entry reflects on the final track, “My Body Is a Cage,” which resonates deeply with our exploration:

“My body is a cage

That keeps me from dancing with the one I love

But my mind holds the key.”

Your mind truly holds the key.
