A study from the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) and Anti-Vax Watch indicates that a mere 12 individuals are responsible for approximately 65% of all misleading anti-vaccine content shared online. They analyzed over 812,000 posts on Facebook and Twitter, highlighting the concentrated nature of this misinformation.

Flu Season Preparedness

As we approach another flu season, it’s crucial to be prepared. The 2021–2022 season is projected to be particularly severe, with estimated hospitalizations ranging from 100,000 to 400,000. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the incidence of flu cases significantly decreased due to various preventive measures. Fortunately, the availability of the flu vaccine can help reduce the number of hospitalizations and fatalities associated with this contagious virus.

Unlike the Measles vaccine, which offers long-term protection after a single injection, the flu vaccine needs to be administered annually due to the rapid mutation of the influenza virus. This mutation occurs through mechanisms like antigenic drift and antigenic shift, necessitating yearly updates to the vaccine.

Flu Vaccine for the 2021–2022 Season

For the current flu season, the FDA has approved vaccines targeting the four most prevalent strains of the virus:

• A/Victoria/2570/2019 (H1N1) pdm09-like virus
• A/Cambodia/e0826360/2020 (H3N2)-like virus
• B/Washington/02/2019-like virus (B/Victoria lineage)
• B/Phuket/3073/2013-like virus (B/Yamagata lineage)

The CDC closely tracks flu cases, indicating that the flu season typically peaks in December and February. The flu vaccine generally remains effective for about six months, which is why the vaccination campaign commences in October for optimal protection until March.

The "Twindemic" Challenge

The term “twindemic” refers to the potential overlap of flu and COVID-19 outbreaks. Should both occur simultaneously, healthcare facilities could become overwhelmed, leaving patients with limited options for care. Last year, due to low flu activity, we fortunately avoided this crisis, but it remains a possibility this season.

To prevent such a scenario, it is essential to get vaccinated against both COVID-19 and influenza. Both vaccines are readily available, with the only exceptions being validated allergies to specific components.
