Chapter 1: The Unexpected Journey
Life often takes us by surprise. You may set out seeking one thing, only to stumble upon something entirely different. Sometimes, what you discover is exactly what you needed but didn't know you were looking for.
My own journey began in my first year of senior high school, the 11th grade as referred to in India. Being a Science student, I was entrenched in the competitive environment surrounding the IIT-JEE exams. My determination to make my family proud pushed me to explore various studies and adopt everything I could find.
This experience highlighted my character as a go-getter and a fighter. While my efforts may have lacked organization at times, the commitment I brought to my pursuits is undeniable.
In the midst of my search for resources related to the JEE syllabus, I stumbled upon a platform named Quora. Little did I realize, this discovery would drastically alter the course of my life.
Year — 2015.
At that time, Quora was a treasure trove of knowledge, filled with elaborate questions and insightful answers. I owe my newfound obsession with reading to the many talented writers on Quora. Their engaging writing captivated me, leading me to consume vast amounts of information daily, mostly on topics like life, love, and relationships—far from anything related to IIT!
While many of my peers were engrossed in social media and pop culture, I take pride in dedicating my time to reading, nurturing my mind into a flourishing garden of thoughts.
Section 1.1: Why Reading is Transformative
Here are two compelling reasons why reading is such a powerful habit:
Accumulated Wisdom
Throughout my life, I've realized that wise individuals in any field are often voracious readers. As Charlie Munger states, "You’d be amazed at how much Warren Buffett reads. You’d be amazed at how much I read." Reading introduces you to new ways of thinking, showcasing diverse perspectives through stories and proverbs. It illuminates gaps in your knowledge, which is vital for personal growth. Engaging with literature that resonates with you can inspire profound awe. As Tim Ferris and many others suggest, living in a state of awe is one of the best ways to lead a meaningful life.
Cultivating Patience
Reading is not without its challenges. It demands time and effort. Each topic has layers that authors delve into, making the reading experience both demanding and rewarding. Developing patience through reading is essential, as it translates into various aspects of life. Without patience, you may sabotage your efforts and struggle to achieve and maintain your goals.
Reading not only enhances your education and sophistication but also transforms you into a more knowledgeable individual. The distinction between avid readers and non-readers is often apparent.
Section 1.2: Reflections on Change
“The man who does not read has no advantage over the man who cannot read.” — Mark Twain
In 2015, I was a directionless young person, lacking self-awareness and healthy habits. With no accomplishments or knowledge to speak of, my self-esteem was low. Reading became my salvation, reshaping my confidence and compassion.
Even if reading feels daunting or unappealing, start small. Dedicate just five minutes a day to any form of reading—be it a blog or a book, fiction or non-fiction. Choose what interests you rather than adhering to external expectations. The goal is to cultivate a regular reading habit, gradually increasing your commitment over time. In just six months, you may find yourself transformed.
