Thankfulness for Another Year of Life: Embracing Growth and Change

Written on

Chapter 1: A Celebration of Life

Today marks my birthday, May 22, which I consider to be the highlight of my year. In fact, I believe it deserves to be recognized as a national holiday! I used to think I was alone in feeling both anxious about aging yet excited for my birthday, but I've learned that's a common sentiment.

Every year, I take time to reflect on my birthday, contemplating the passage of time. Although I often keep these reflections private due to their personal nature, they are meaningful to me.

As we all know, aging is an inevitable part of life; if we are alive, we will grow older each day. While society often portrays this as a negative, I’m convinced that it doesn’t have to be.

Not long ago, I had a different perspective. I even penned a piece titled, "Who Are We If We Aren't Young?" which I later removed, as it garnered minimal attention and felt too heavy. It expressed a sense of loss regarding one's place in society once youth fades, but this birthday, I felt no dread. Instead, I was filled with gratitude for the journey around the sun that I’ve been granted.

What prompted this shift in mindset? It’s hard to pinpoint, but several factors have played a role. The loss of friends my age in the past year has been a wake-up call. Death can strike unexpectedly, and the ongoing pandemic has only deepened that realization.

One guiding principle has emerged for me, encapsulated in the serenity prayer my mother often shares: "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference." This has become my new mantra.

Here are some insights I've gathered along the way:

Section 1.1: Purpose and Planning

Having a clear purpose and plan is essential. I must admit, I spent years drifting without direction. Regardless of your age or circumstances, having a plan adds meaning to your life. After leaving college without a clear path, I found myself becoming a teacher and later discovering my passion for writing. Many may suggest it's okay to be uncertain about your future, which is true, but planning is still vital for the life you're living right now.

While it's natural to change your mind and explore different paths, having a consistent plan can alleviate anxiety and provide a sense of control. Consider creating short-term and long-term plans to guide your journey.

Section 1.2: Envisioning Your Future

Having a clear vision of your desired life is crucial. If you can't see it, achieving it becomes nearly impossible. When you visualize your goals, you set yourself on a path toward realization.

Subsection 1.2.1: Embracing Your Imperfections

Embracing imperfections and self-acceptance

I used to be my harshest critic, fixating on my flaws and mistakes. I’ve decided to change this mindset. I refuse to dwell on errors or perceived shortcomings. Recognizing that I am human and imperfect has liberated me from that cycle of self-criticism.

Section 1.3: The Power of Individual Journey

Comparing myself to others used to weigh heavily on me, but I’ve learned that everyone has their own unique path. It doesn’t matter what milestones others reach; what matters is focusing on my life and my journey.

Never underestimate your worth based on external opinions. Others’ views of you are irrelevant, and the right choice is to prioritize your own perspective.

Chapter 2: Growth Through Experience

When faced with trivial matters that could spark worry or anger, I remind myself that I’m too mature for such concerns. This practice encourages me to channel my energy into something productive or uplifting.

Believing that I’m exactly where I’m meant to be has been transformative. It might seem like an excuse for not taking responsibility, but this belief has emerged from deep self-reflection. It’s about pursuing the life you desire and fighting for it because you deserve it.

Never lose sight of your dreams or let age dictate your aspirations. Life’s potential doesn’t come with an expiration date. You can still achieve great things, no matter when they happen.

This year, I've never felt as thankful, fulfilled, or blessed as I do today. The changes I've experienced have been internal, and I’m looking forward to what lies ahead.
