Tech Trends: A Copy-Paste Culture in the Industry
Written on
The Current State of Tech
Once again, another week has passed, filled with absurd happenings in the tech world. Honestly, some days I dream of escaping to a cozy little house in the countryside, nestled on a hill surrounded by trees, with a cute mop dog at my feet and a cold beer in hand. But amidst all this, I can’t help but wonder: where have all the Apple critics gone?
It's Frustrating, Isn't It?
This is what really gets under my skin: people disparaging brands and technology only to find those same brands doing exactly what they criticized months or years later. Take Google's recent announcement of the PixelBuds Pro. Remember when Apple’s AirPods Pro were mocked by many as being anything but "pro"? Fast forward to now, and Google is using the exact same marketing strategies. At this point, it seems everyone should just accept that whatever Apple innovates will soon be mirrored by the rest of the industry. #noCharger, #nexus7, #nexus4—the list goes on. Maybe I should consider a job at Google since it appears their strategy is simply copy-pasting. I could be an expert! 😁
Self-Service Repair: A Flawed Promise
I'll keep this brief, as I elaborated on this topic just the other day. The idea of a Right to Repair sounds great in theory. However, when put into practice, it often ends up looking like what Apple has done: a simple $60 battery replacement suddenly costing you $1,300, and you're left to potentially ruin your iPhone yourself! Yes, this is what was missing in our lives—expensive tools shipped back and forth, unnecessary stress, and a slew of frustrated customers with broken devices. The path to repair is littered with shattered screens…
Research Data for Humanity
What was that? It seems that Meta, TikTok, and YouTube may have to collaborate with researchers by sharing their data. Interesting! I recently proposed a similar idea for dating apps. Looks like someone in power is reading my humble Medium posts! However, this could devolve into chaos, especially since the initiative originates from the EU and US governments. They claim it's for transparency, which sounds nice on paper, but we all remember the EU cookie law. It promised great things but ended up making websites look terrible, and the user experience has suffered ever since. And who will ensure data anonymization? The Irish Banshee?
FIDO: Not Just a Dog
No adorable tail-wagging here—this is Pinterest territory. Speaking of which, imagine a world where you never have to log into any site again! Apple, Google, and Microsoft are apparently joining forces to develop a passwordless sign-in solution based on a cross-platform standard known as FIDO. And no, it's not a dog nor just another email link login. This is a more intricate system tied to your actual device. In theory, once this is implemented, logging in using biometrics will mean you won't need to log into anything else. This sounds fantastic, but I wonder how I'll manage to log into multiple Gmail accounts on the same device or assist my mom with her spam issues. I guess we will find out eventually…
Conclusion
That's it for now, folks! I just finished a 330ml can and was quite thirsty! If you're looking for more comprehensive news and insights, perhaps try searching "tech news" on DuckDuckGo; maybe you’ll discover something even more enticing than my brief updates. Until next time, thanks for tuning in—you're the ears to my PixelBuds Pro. Hic! 👋
