Strange to Exist: A Deep Dive into Life’s Mysteries

Chapter 1: The Existential Query
In the 1998 album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel, Jeff Magnum poses a thought-provoking question: “How strange it is to be anything at all.” This lyric resonates deeply with me, encapsulating the essence of existential contemplation through its surreal yet relatable observations about life.
One of my favorite parts of the title track is the second verse, which reflects on the transient nature of existence:
And one day we will die
And our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea
But for now we are young
Let us lay in the sun
And count every beautiful thing we can see
Love to be
In the arms of all I’m keepin’ here with me
In the midst of acknowledging life’s wildness and the beauty that surrounds us, Magnum raises a question that deserves our attention. How often do we pause to reflect on the sheer oddity of our existence?
I recall a night driving home from college, the sky clear with stars twinkling above. My mind was not particularly philosophical; I was more preoccupied with dinner plans and the value menu options for my limited budget. Yet, as I gazed up at the stars, a wave of curiosity washed over me.
Where am I? What is this place? Why are there lights in the sky? How do I have the ability to see? Am I known? What does it mean to exist?
This experience was both daunting and filled with gratitude. The mysteries of life suddenly became more captivating, amplifying the strangeness of our existence. In that moment, the insignificance of my being—and even that of the most prominent figures in history—felt magnified.
It struck me that the universe inspires diverse interpretations among conscious beings. Some attribute the origin of existence to a divine creator, infusing life with purpose and meaning, while others subscribe to a purely naturalistic view. What a curious phenomenon to witness such varying conclusions arising from the same universe.
Taking a step back from our frustrations, disagreements, and the distractions of modern technology can allow us to ponder this fundamental existential question. We often get so caught up in our beliefs that we overlook the sheer peculiarity of our existence. Whether you attribute it to chance, divine intervention, or other forces, one fact remains: it is undeniably strange.
Isn’t it peculiar to be anything at all?
Thank you, Mr. Magnum.
