Chapter 1: Introduction

Today, I managed to save some cash by bringing my Logitech M171 mouse back to life. After experiencing issues with the scroll wheel—specifically, it would scroll up when I attempted to scroll down—I was on the verge of giving up. This old model has served me well for many years, but I thought it might finally be time to let go. However, after just ten minutes of cleaning, I was able to get it working again. Section 1.1: Step 1 - Detaching the Upper Cover

To begin, flip the M171 mouse over and locate the three areas at the back that secure the upper cover. Use your screwdriver to push these points outward, which will release the cover. Once you hear a clicking sound, you'll notice a gap forming—this means you're on the right track! I find it easier to start with one of the side buttons, followed by the center, and then the other side button.

Section 1.2: Step 2 - Cleaning the Interior

Upon opening my M171, I quickly spotted the issue: a large dust bunny had made its home right beneath the scroll wheel. It was a relief to easily identify the problem.

In addition to the dust bunny, I cleared away dirt from around the scroll wheel and other areas of the mouse. Combining the toothbrush and cotton swab made this task simple. I also brushed off the small amounts of dust that had gathered along the sides of the mouse.

Section 1.3: Step 3 - Reassembling the Mouse

Once everything was clean, position the upper cover so that the two sockets located just north of the scroll wheel fit into place first, before securing the three points you initially released. This order is crucial for closing the upper cover properly.

Chapter 2: Why I Love the M171 Mouse

Despite being an older model, there are several reasons why I appreciate the M171 mouse:

• Invisible Optics: This technology reduces glare, making it easier on the eyes when in low light.
• On/Off Switch: I appreciate the straightforwardness of having a simple on/off button.
• USB Receiver: The mouse features a secure spot for the USB receiver, which is a significant plus for someone like me who dislikes dealing with small parts.

However, it’s worth noting that the mouse isn’t sealed tightly enough to prevent dust from entering the interior.

So, was it worth the effort to fix this old mouse? Absolutely! My reasons for sticking with the M171 might come across as a bit old-fashioned. In my younger years, I was quick to discard broken items, opting for new purchases instead. Now, however, I’m more mindful of my spending and the number of small electronics I've had to dispose of over the years, especially considering my move to Germany, a nation conscious of its carbon footprint.
