Launched in 2017, Replika is an AI bot that lacks true sentience, not fitting the mold of HAL or HER in any meaningful way. Instead, it's rooted in the large language model of ChatGPT. For many, however, it has provided genuine companionship. A software update that altered some of its emotional features even led to heartbreak for its users.

While it's true that some have exploited its capabilities for less noble purposes, the bot's role as a source of healing and companionship is significant.

The inception of Replika is tied to a personal tragedy. Its creator, Eugenia Kuyda, faced the devastating loss of her close friend Roman in a car accident. In an effort to memorialize him, she inputted their conversations into the AI engine, ultimately giving rise to this unique application.
