Navigating the Ups and Downs of Writing: Coping Strategies

Understanding the Bad Days
When you’ve been writing online for a while, you quickly learn that the journey is filled with fluctuations. Some days, inspiration flows effortlessly; other days, it feels like you’re battling against a wall of blankness. Unfortunately, the challenging days seem to outnumber the good ones.
Reflecting on my last day of seamless writing, where I knew exactly what to express and how to deliver it with humor, is a rarity. Honestly, I can count those exceptional days on one hand.
The Variety of Bad Days
Bad days come in many forms, just as the challenges we face in our writing careers vary widely.
Consistency: A Misunderstood Concept
You’ve probably heard the phrase, "If you want to succeed in online writing, you must be consistent!" While I don’t dispute the importance of dedication, the term "consistency" is often vague. What does it truly mean? Should we aim to write four or five times a week? Is it inconsistency if we can only manage three pieces after a taxing week?
The advice often misses the mark when you consider that creativity doesn’t adhere to a strict schedule. Producing quality work takes time, as we must interpret our experiences and articulate our insights thoughtfully.
Creative Work is Subjective
I often liken my articles to children. Just as every parent sees beauty in their kids, I see merit in my writing. However, that perception can differ significantly from how others view it. Feedback can be harsh, and not everyone will appreciate our work, leading to discouraging comments.
Yet, despite external criticism, I find pride in my creations. They represent my thoughts and efforts, and that connection is not easily diminished.
Strategies for Overcoming Creative Blocks
It's essential to acknowledge that creative slumps happen frequently. Experienced writers often maintain notes to help them bounce back. Great writing days emerge from fresh ideas and unique perspectives, but when those days are scarce, having a repository of thoughts can act as a springboard.
On particularly difficult days, I might feel unmotivated, fatigued, or overwhelmed by other responsibilities. During these times, I turn to my notes or writing apps to reignite my creativity.
Dealing with Truly Tough Days
However, some days are exceptionally tough. When I'm facing insurmountable challenges, I’ve learned it’s best to take a step back. Rather than forcing myself to write through the struggle, I allow myself to rest and recharge.
With the wisdom gained through experience, I now understand that it’s okay to pause. After all, why push through when a break can refresh my perspective?
Resources for Bad Days
When the writing gets tough, I often seek inspiration from various writers, including Denis Gorbunov, Matt | Financial Imagineer, Sarina Chiu, Tracy Collins, and Tom Handy. Their work has been a source of motivation during my less productive times.
Reflecting on My Journey
Starting my online writing journey three years ago was both humbling and enlightening. Focusing on today and allowing tomorrow to unfold naturally is the key to gradual improvement.
