I entered the advertising industry in an unexpected way. While in college, I was unsure of my career path, initially leaning toward investment banking but lacking momentum. A marketing class felt too easy for me.

I was helping to organize a networking event at the university when our guest speaker, the president of an advertising agency called Fluid Studio, shared valuable insights. He emphasized the importance of pursuing opportunities rather than waiting for them to come. After the event, I approached him and asked for a job. To my surprise, he agreed to interview me.

This marked the beginning of my career as an intern, and within four years, I advanced to the role of managing partner.

This leads to a common belief that our mistakes can be our best teachers. Can you share a humorous mistake from your early career and what you learned?

While I wouldn’t call it my biggest blunder, one notable learning experience was the need to slow down. I’ve always been a fast-paced individual, both in thought and movement. My colleagues would often scramble out of the way when they heard me approaching.

At a company meeting, I received a pair of golden shoes with wings as a lighthearted reminder to be more deliberate in my actions and interactions with teammates.

Recognizing that we can't achieve success alone, is there someone you credit with helping you along the way?

I am fortunate to have had many mentors, but David Parker stands out. I met him while assisting with a presidential campaign in college. He offered me guidance as I began my career.

After interning for him, I was amazed when he invited me to join him in Mexico City for meetings on a new product launch. This experience was eye-opening, as I witnessed his strategic approach to negotiating a multinational deal. Over the next decade, we continued to meet, and he provided invaluable advice that shaped my career.

Research shows that purpose-driven organizations tend to perform better. What was the vision behind your organization when it started?

At Max Connect, we defined our purpose as creating meaningful contributions. We aimed to introduce a fresh perspective that would deliver real value to our clients and impact the lives of consumers positively.

Every team member, whether a designer or an account strategist, rallied behind this mission. It fostered a sense of unity and alignment within the agency.

Now, let’s focus on how you lead your team during challenging times. Can you share a relevant experience?

In the early days of Fluid Studio, we faced significant changes, including a drastic reduction in staff and revenue. The owner of our holding company questioned whether it was worth continuing.

After considering our options, I proposed that we either fully commit to building something great or close our doors. We chose to stay and put our all into our work, leading us to become one of the most awarded agencies in our region, growing our team and revenue exponentially over the next decade.

Did you ever contemplate giving up? What kept you motivated during difficult times?

There were undeniably tough days. I recall nights spent at the office, trying to catch a quick nap before diving back into client projects. The responsibility of supporting my family and my team motivated me to push through challenges.

I found that the darkest days often precede breakthroughs. My mantra has always been, “Hard is good,” which reminds me that both challenges and successes are essential parts of the journey.

Do you have a book that has significantly influenced your leadership approach?

I’ve always been drawn to adventure, which is why one of my favorite books is "Endurance," about Sir Ernest Shackleton's historic Antarctic expedition.

During a time of growth and challenges in my agency, I found inspiration in Shackleton's determination to save every crew member despite seemingly insurmountable odds. His leadership during adversity serves as a reminder of the power of resilience.

What do you believe is the most vital role of a leader in challenging times?

A leader must maintain confidence in their team's ability to succeed while clearly defining a path forward. This involves fostering collaboration and encouraging team members to rise to the occasion and exceed expectations.

In times of uncertainty, how can a leader uplift morale and inspire their team?

I often share stories of past leaders and the sacrifices they made for their beliefs. When leaders prioritize the needs of their teams, it fosters loyalty and commitment.

During COVID-19, we faced a revenue drop, and we decided to cut leadership salaries to avoid layoffs. This move united our team, resulting in substantial revenue growth later that year.

What’s your approach to delivering difficult news to your team and clients?

I believe in communicating transparently and frequently. It's crucial to own difficult situations and outline steps for resolution to maintain trust and confidence.

How can leaders plan amidst unpredictability?

Staying grounded in core values provides clarity in decision-making. During the COVID-19 lockdown, while others were laying off staff, we sought out top talent, which ultimately strengthened our agency.

What principle do you think is paramount for guiding a company through turbulent times?

Authenticity and clarity of purpose are vital. Organizations may need to pivot in response to challenges, but having a "True North" ensures everyone is aligned in their actions and decisions.
