Finding Balance: Mastering Time Management for Life and Studies

Written on

Chapter 1: The Reality of Time Management

I often chuckle inwardly when I hear discussions on time management. After all, we have no control over the relentless march of time. Reflecting on my own journey, I certainly didn’t plan to take a quarter-century to complete my college education. Two weddings, two divorces, and a couple of challenging cross-continental relocations definitely delayed my progress.

Upon reaching the milestone of 30, I stumbled upon a list of new Presidential staff members in a Smithsonian magazine. This four-page feature showcased numerous individuals around my age, many already boasting master’s and doctoral degrees. At that moment, I realized I hadn't even obtained my associate degree! It prompted a deep introspection about my goals.

Teaching had always been my passion. To embark on this new adventure, it was essential to start from my current position—whether that’s my location, educational status, or even my wardrobe size. For casual explorations, the route may be flexible; however, for significant endeavors like pursuing a college degree, clarity is crucial.

Assessing where I stood in my academic journey, I recognized the need to bridge gaps, eliminate ineffective habits, and ultimately make progress. This process involved submitting applications, completing prerequisites, arranging financial aid, and integrating this extensive time commitment into my daily life. While time remains an unstoppable force, our choices in how we use it are entirely within our grasp.

Cozy nap with my cat, Miss Merryweather

My personal vice? Sleep. I adore taking naps, especially on the couch with the TV humming in the background, and my elderly cat, Miss Merryweather, nestled at my feet. My ex-husband used to interrupt my slumber for no apparent reason, instructing me to move to the bedroom, which effectively shattered my peaceful rest. This often left me awake but unproductive at my desk.

Many people claim they lack time for essential tasks yet somehow keep up with their favorite television shows. Others might spend countless hours and resources on grooming and social outings instead of advancing their educational objectives. So, how do the exceptionally productive manage to accomplish so much in the same 168 hours we all have each week?

This brings us to the importance of using a TimeFinder: a tool to analyze your current time allocation. Are you achieving your desired outcomes? With an understanding of your existing schedule, can you realistically find the necessary hours for classes, studying, research, and academic writing?

Without a clear grasp of where your hours are spent, juggling everyday life alongside the demands of graduate school—where maintaining a B average is essential—can prove challenging. I encourage you to visit the initial TIMEFINDER blog: Master Plan — Part 1. Download the template and spend a week documenting your actual time usage.

HINT: Utilize color coding to distinguish between different activities you identify.

Chapter 2: Strategies for Effective Time Management

The key takeaway is this: how you manage your time—similar to how you manage your finances—shapes your trajectory and what you can achieve. While I enjoy socializing, I prioritize my responsibilities and well-being over leisure.

Perhaps I’ve gained wisdom through experience, or perhaps I’ve simply matured.
