Honestly, my frequent visits to Subway could warrant me a share in the franchise based on my sandwich purchases over the years.
I'm certainly not alone in this trend. A Gallup survey recently revealed that Americans are preparing a record-low average of 8.2 meals per week at home. While indulging in takeout occasionally might not be problematic, a leading physician warns that this increasing habit could be detrimental to our health.
"Ultra-processed foods have become a major concern," he states.

Recently, I stumbled upon an interview with Dr. Andre Goy, a prominent physician and chef at Hackensack Meridian Health’s John Theurer Cancer Center in New Jersey. He asserts that our dependence on convenience foods is a significant factor contributing to the alarming rise in cancer cases across the U.S. He explained to Fox News:
"The primary issue in the American diet is our reliance on convenience rather than home-cooked meals. This leads to excessive consumption of processed foods, which contribute to obesity and poor dietary habits. Such factors can disrupt our microbiome, resulting in chronic inflammation and a heightened risk of cancer."
Dr. Goy identifies ultra-processed foods, laden with salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats, as the prime culprits. These dietary landmines lack nutritional benefits and pose serious health risks. Compounding the issue, many people also consume alcohol excessively and do not engage in sufficient physical activity.
Finding Healthier Alternatives
To mitigate cancer risk associated with diet, Dr. Goy advocates for a plant-based eating approach. He elaborated, "A plant-based diet prioritizes the intake of vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. Opt for whole, unprocessed foods whenever possible, focusing on plant sources of protein like quinoa, black beans, and chia seeds."
While shifting away from a meat-centric diet may be challenging, Dr. Goy emphasizes its importance for long-term health.
The Benefits of Home Cooking
Cooking at home offers numerous advantages, including weight loss, lower cancer risk, and the satisfaction of preparing meals for oneself and loved ones. Personally, my decision to reduce dining out has little to do with health—it's primarily about saving money. With rising costs, you'll likely find your finances healthier if you make similar changes.
