Chapter 1: The Art of Patience in Business
Patience transcends being merely a virtue; it plays a critical role in achieving success, particularly in sectors driven by innovation and creativity. In this installment of our series spotlighting women who are making waves in their industries, we had the privilege to speak with Galit Chay.
Galit, who hails from Tel Aviv, is the visionary founder of BaBoo, a renowned design marketplace based in New York City. With her extensive background in e-commerce, home goods, and buying, she has transformed BaBoo into a premier hub for those who appreciate artisanal, handcrafted items sourced from around the globe. Her dedication to art, authenticity, and global connection is what sets BaBoo apart as a unique intersection of e-commerce and traditional craftsmanship.
Thank you for joining us! Before we dive deeper, could you share a bit about your background and what led you to this career?
I grew up in Tel Aviv, where my fascination with design and global culture took root. My earlier career in psychology, which often involved navigating complex interpersonal dynamics and the darker aspects of life, provided me with a distinct worldview. This experience ultimately inspired me to pursue a career that celebrates beauty, positivity, and the brighter facets of life, while keeping a people-centric focus.
In 2008, I moved to San Francisco and launched BaBoo, a sanctuary for artisanal creativity. At that time, I felt the local design landscape was somewhat uninspired and conventional, so I aimed to introduce something fresh. BaBoo embodies my love for design, art, and community, featuring a diverse array of handcrafted items from various cultures. While I may not be a traditional artist, my talent lies in curating unique and high-quality pieces.
In 2023, we relocated BaBoo to New York City, opening a new showroom in the vibrant Tribeca neighborhood. Our mission extends beyond merely selling products; we aim to create connections and moments of joy through design.
Section 1.1: Disruption Through Authenticity
What sets BaBoo apart in the marketplace is our unwavering commitment to supporting small makers from around the world. We intentionally avoid sourcing goods from regions that rely on low-cost labor. Instead, we spotlight artisans who offer unique, one-of-a-kind creations. This strategy not only uplifts diverse global talent but also keeps our collection exclusive and distinctive.
By harmonizing various cultural influences, we foster joy through design. A prime example is the Chicken Foot Stool from the US, inspired by the work of Ronel Jordaan from South Africa. Both pieces are available at BaBoo, beautifully illustrating the richness of their diverse origins.
Our guiding philosophy is simple yet profound: your home should be a playground, a space to rediscover the joy of your inner child. We encourage individuals to transform their living spaces into canvases for their imagination.
Subsection 1.1.1: Learning Through Mistakes
Can you share a humorous mistake you encountered during your early days, along with the lesson you took from it?
Years ago, I met a designer I greatly admired. He introduced me to a friend who created unique pieces, and captivated by a single stunning photo, I impulsively decided to purchase an item. However, when the boxes arrived, we were met with poorly crafted pieces reminiscent of preschool crafts. We couldn't help but laugh, and when asked about them, we would just say, "It's a long story." This taught me a vital lesson: never make a purchase based solely on personal connections or images. Now, I insist on seeing items in person before buying to prevent such blunders.
Section 1.2: Mentorship and Growth
Who have been your mentors, and how have they influenced your journey?
One of my most impactful mentors was the owner of an African art gallery next to my first brick-and-mortar store in San Francisco. Over time, she became not just a neighbor but a close friend. She imparted valuable lessons about patience, self-belief, and the significance of support and collaboration in retail. Her guidance played a crucial role in shaping my entrepreneurial journey.
Chapter 2: The Fine Line of Disruption
In today’s context, disruption is often viewed positively. But is it always beneficial? When can we recognize that a system has 'withstood the test of time'? Can you explain when disruption is advantageous and when it may not be?
Successful disruption hinges on whether the change benefits both consumers and the business. It's vital to strike a balance between challenging industry norms and embracing improvements that foster growth and enhance customer experiences.
There are scenarios where disruption may yield unfavorable outcomes, particularly if it conflicts with established practices. Disrupting merely for the sake of change can alienate customers, create confusion, and harm a brand's reputation.
For instance, consider the commission structures in the interior design sector. If a new entrant were to completely eliminate commissions without a compelling alternative, it could have negative repercussions. Designers might lose motivation to provide personalized service, leading clients to feel their value is diminished.
I've also come to recognize the significance of industry trends, such as social media, which I initially resisted due to a desire not to conform. Over time, I understood that in our digital age, social media is vital for engaging audiences and growing a business. Had we embraced it sooner, we might have capitalized on remarkable opportunities.
Section 2.1: Pearls of Wisdom
Could you share three of the most impactful pieces of advice you’ve received?
Throughout my journey, I’ve been fortunate to receive numerous insights, but three stand out for their profound influence on my life:
- Be Patient — Success is a gradual process, even in our fast-paced world. Patience is essential, especially in creative industries, as it allows others to appreciate the value of what you offer.
- Have Integrity — Upholding integrity fosters respect and trust, leading to fruitful collaborations. It also brings me a deep sense of inner peace.
- Embrace Humor — Humor is an invaluable tool in navigating work challenges. A few laughs can uplift the mood and enhance productivity, reminding us that laughter truly is the best medicine!
What’s next on your agenda for shaking things up?
I'm thrilled about the innovative changes we’re planning for our showroom. We aim to redefine the traditional retail experience by opening in the evenings, creating a lively atmosphere complete with food and drinks. This shift not only accommodates our clients’ lifestyles but also distinguishes us from conventional retail models.
I’m also looking forward to exploring Seoul, Korea, to discover unique pieces for our collection. The rich cultural landscape in Seoul presents an incredible opportunity for us to introduce new designs to our clientele.
In your view, what challenges do 'women disruptors' face that their male counterparts do not?
In my opinion, the challenges of innovation are universal and not confined by gender. The focus should be on fostering an environment that supports all disruptors equally.
Do you have a book, podcast, or talk that has significantly influenced your thinking?
Yes, two stories have profoundly shaped my perspective. The first is "The Little Prince" by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The wisdom in, "All grown-ups were once children… but only a few of them remember it," resonates deeply with me. It inspires me to embrace the optimism and curiosity inherent in childhood.
The second is "Yatir Evening Express" by A.B. Yehoshua, which I learned during high school. The story illustrates how anxiety and guilt can propel individuals toward madness, suggesting that absolute freedom without moral boundaries can lead to tragic consequences.
If you could inspire a movement to bring about significant good, what would it be?
I'm deeply troubled by ignorance, so I believe education is key to benefiting the most people. However, I am particularly passionate about addressing homelessness to ensure everyone has a place to call home.
Can you share your favorite "Life Lesson Quote" and its relevance in your life?
"Never miss a good chance to shut up." — Will Rogers. This reminds me of the power of words; once spoken, they cannot be retracted. It has taught me the importance of discerning when to speak and when to hold back.
