Exploring the Pros and Cons of Working at Outlier AI

Written on

Chapter 1: A Morning Boost

This morning, I treated myself to a large refill coffee from the local 7-Eleven, which cost me $1.79. If you haven't signed up for a rewards account with 7-Eleven yet, I highly recommend doing so. My coffee and breakfast only set me back a total of $3.28, as I redeemed points for a free item. I found a donut for just a dollar, and the coffee was incredibly fresh.

Moving forward…

In my previous article, I mentioned that I had started a new job at Outlier. For those unfamiliar with Outlier, it’s a company focused on hiring individuals to train AI models. Essentially, you teach an AI to see, read, and communicate in a human-like manner.

Section 1.1: Advantages of Working at Outlier

I’ve discovered several advantages during my time at Outlier:

  • Remote Work: While you need to use a desktop or laptop, mobile devices are not supported for the interface.
  • Competitive Pay: Projects offer compensation ranging from $15 to $21 per hour.
  • Comprehensive Training: They provide extensive training and practice tasks that you are paid for completing.
  • Guided Instructions: You receive instructions for each task while working on it, enhancing your likelihood of success.
  • Bonus Opportunities: Completing “missions” allows you to earn bonus pay, which can be as high as $75.00.

Subsection 1.1.1: Challenges Faced

However, there are some downsides to consider:

  • Time Constraints: You have a strict limit of 75 minutes to complete each task. If you exceed this, you can submit a form to get compensated for the time spent.
  • Writing Demands: Some tasks require extensive writing—up to 4,000 words—which can be quite challenging within the time limit.
  • Research Obligations: Certain assignments necessitate sourcing information from various sites, requiring you to provide references with URLs, which is mandatory.
  • Quality Control: All written tasks must be of high quality, free from grammatical errors, and you cannot use auto-generated text. Submissions are thoroughly checked, and any major mistakes will flag the task.
  • Feedback and Revisions: If you do not follow instructions precisely, you risk receiving negative feedback and may have to redo the task until it meets acceptable standards. Failure to improve after several attempts can lead to removal from the project.
  • Task Limitations: There are instances where a throttle is implemented, limiting the number of tasks available to you within a 48-hour period, ensuring fair distribution of work among all employees.

Section 1.2: Final Thoughts

In all honesty, I landed this job with a mix of luck and hope. I’m not particularly tech-savvy, but I possess the required educational qualifications (an Associate's degree or higher). I managed to pass the assessments and secure a position with the company. Working part-time, I earn a reasonable income that helps supplement my fixed earnings.

Have a wonderful day, and see you again soon!
