Exploring the Illusions of Spiritual Awakening and Ego

Chapter 1: The Buzz Around Spiritual Awakening
Have you noticed the term "spiritual awakening" trending across social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok? It seems to have become a catchphrase. However, let’s sift through the distractions and explore what lies beneath this fascination.
Is There a Hierarchy in Spiritual Awareness?
The answer is both yes and no. If you've traversed this path in solitude for too long, you might have experienced the loneliness that accompanies it. This feeling can intensify when you look for validation in ideas like "spiritual awakening," which often hold as much depth as those fun "MBTI personality type" quizzes.
At its essence, "spiritual awakening" frequently acts as a mere ploy of the ego. The ego, or your self-identity, constantly seeks to redefine itself, yearning for something novel each day. This is simply part of the ego's allure—it can transform into whoever it needs to be at any moment.
What else does the ego relish?
The establishment of hierarchies, which make us feel either superior or inferior. It thrives on distinctions, fostering a sense of "I'm enlightened" versus "you're still asleep." This allure of awakening feeds the ego's need to stand apart.
The Illusion of Spiritual Superiority
Take a moment to reflect. Does a truck driver or a construction worker, who shoulders the responsibility of caring for multiple dependents, possess any less spiritual depth simply because they’re not meditating in a retreat? Or what about a guru claiming divine status—does that truly make him more enlightened?
In reality, spirituality often serves as a badge that individuals wear to assert a unique standing.
Chapter 2: Embracing the State of Nothingness
When I reached the state of "nothingness" during my own journey, I discovered both liberation and a sobering realization. Fundamentally, nothing had shifted. The sensation of being "awakened" was simply another layer of illusion.
Being "awakened" did not alter the roles I had to fulfill in life—be it as a student, daughter, or partner. Yes, I learned that "I" was merely playing a role, yet that insight did not grant me the privilege to flaunt this understanding as a mark of honor.
So, should you find yourself in a state of "awakening," enjoy the experience, but do not forget that it is just another manifestation of the ego. Savor it while it lasts, and then let it dissipate. The "I" has different roles to engage in each day, each moment.
The Real Work: Authentic Presence
The true endeavor lies in being present and genuine in every moment, rather than chasing fleeting feelings of superiority. Much like water that conforms to its surroundings, the ego's purpose is to be adaptable. Occasionally, this may involve embracing roles or behaviors we may wish to evade.
Let us cast aside the illusions of spiritual superiority and concentrate on what is genuinely important: showing up fully and authentically. Everyone is navigating their own path, and the real task is to embrace that journey with an open heart.
