Chapter 1: The Value of Simplicity

In recent updates to my productivity system, I've come to appreciate the power of plain text. It's become clear to me that no matter what tools I use, the fundamentals remain vital.

Just a few days after sharing how my daily notes in Obsidian have evolved, I've experienced another significant enhancement—a transition to a straightforward, multi-column layout. A huge shoutout to TfTHacker for the inspiration!

This shift has led me to ponder some critical questions: Am I falling into the trap of complicating my life with unnecessary features? Am I constructing an elaborate system on a shaky foundation? Is the allure of aesthetics diverting my focus from what truly matters?

If the answer to any of these is affirmative, then I need to reassess.

I took a moment to ground myself by stripping away the extraneous elements to see what truly lies at the core of my system. To my relief, everything is still accessible and functional!

If I had to abandon Obsidian, I would seamlessly transition back to 1Writer. While I would lose features like DataView tables and CSS modifications, the essence of my information would remain intact. Everything would revert to a single folder, but that wouldn't compromise the value of what I have.

This minimalist approach has its unique charm. It’s straightforward, honest, and conveys the necessary information clearly. My plain text productivity structure, developed over five years, consists of lists—just like when I was an idealistic youth in the 1980s. Now, as an experienced adult, I find these lists just as beneficial as ever.

While my analog notebooks lacked hyperlinks, they had bookmarks and page numbers that guided me to important sections—essentially serving as quick links.

What a relief that brings!

I’ve reassured myself that it's perfectly fine to navigate through a sophisticated system like Obsidian, but my reliable plain text approach can take me anywhere it can. It may not be as fast or flashy, but it serves its purpose well.

If Obsidian were to disappear, I would certainly miss it initially, but the foundation of my system would remain unaltered. I would continue to keep my lists in plain text and jot down notes in my beloved paper notebook and planner—my three indispensable tools. And if the digital realm ever vanished, paper would suffice.

However, it's unlikely we’ll regress to a pre-digital age or face an apocalyptic scenario, so I feel secure in my current setup.

Thanks to that resource, I’ve also integrated some fantastic page header icons using the Customizable Page Header and Title Bar plugin, which, despite its lengthy name, offers impressive features.
