Embracing Imperfection: Overcoming Perfection Paralysis

Chapter 1: The Fear of Imperfection

Nothing strikes fear quite like the thought of submitting a work for sale that doesn’t meet your standards of perfection.

Recently, I took a significant step by submitting my first journal for publication on Amazon. This project had been on my mind throughout my holiday break, evolving into a passionate pursuit. My aim was to create something meaningful that would assist me during my mother's battle with cancer and express gratitude amidst the chaos.

Initially, I envisioned a 90-day challenge, but the software I was using couldn't handle that many pages. After much contemplation, I realized that starting with a 30-day framework would be more practical for fostering lasting change. Research suggests that it takes about a month of consistent effort to establish a new habit.

However, like many new ventures, it wasn't flawless. It felt as if I was navigating uncharted waters, fully aware of potential pitfalls, as I struggled to muster the courage to hit the 'submit' button. If it succeeds, that's fantastic, but I also accept the possibility of failure.

Tony Robbins discusses in "Unleash the Power Within" that the distance between being good and truly exceptional is minuscule. Many give up just shy of reaching their goals. He uses weightlifting as a metaphor, which resonates deeply with me. To achieve exceptional results—like building muscle and sculpting an impressive physique—one must push beyond the average repetition count.

For instance, many people stop at ten reps because that's what's prescribed, but those striving for greatness complete 11 to 13 reps. Even when their muscles are screaming in pain, they persevere, understanding that those extra reps are what catalyze significant growth. This principle applies far beyond just fitness.

It's the individuals who make those extra phone calls that secure additional sales. It's those who produce a few more pieces of content that could potentially go viral. It's the employees who put in that extra effort, even without being asked, who earn promotions. It's those who engage with just one more tutorial that finally clarifies a complex issue.

Do any of these scenarios resonate with you?

Key Takeaway

In our lives, we consistently have opportunities to go that extra mile, pushing ourselves toward excellence. So, take action—even when no one is watching. Strive for exceptionalism in everything you do; it fosters a sense of accomplishment.

Achieving this requires hard work, effort, building relationships, and often doing more than what’s expected without immediate reward. However, those who contribute more to others, excel in their jobs, and pursue their passions are the ones who ultimately reap greater rewards.

If you find yourself in a situation where all that’s left is to click 'submit,' seize the moment. There’s no better time to take that leap of faith than now. Remember, if you don't take the chance, you'll never discover what you could truly achieve!
