Embracing a Simpler Life: Lessons from Moving to Spain
Written on
Chapter 1: A Shift in Perspective
Before I embarked on my journey to Spain, those around me expressed doubt about my ability to adapt without immediate employment. This sentiment rings true in America, where the prevailing belief suggests that hard work equates to success. The American dream often revolves around relentless effort, culminating in the display of unnecessary possessions—essentially an unspoken agreement that demands devotion to work above all else.
Should you choose to break free from this relentless hustle, you may find yourself struggling or relying on someone else for support. The truth is, this lifestyle is unsustainable.
For 16 years, I was entrenched in a workaholic routine, often pushing myself to the brink as a nurse, sometimes logging up to 80 hours a week. That was my norm. However, upon my arrival in Europe, and later in Spain, I became enveloped by the richness of friendships, culture, language, art, and music. As I embraced a more self-sufficient lifestyle on a farm, my previous corporate existence faded into the background.
Instead of the frantic pace of urban life, I found tranquility in nature. The lush green hills and expansive blue skies offered a refreshing escape. Gone were the days of battling through traffic or enduring crowded subways; I now reveled in the simplicity of walking barefoot or cycling along winding paths to nearby villages.
The people I encountered were markedly different; their lives weren't dictated by work schedules. Instead, they worked to enjoy life, relishing in good food, wine, and the company of loved ones. They valued their time with family and friends, never taking it for granted.
Adopting the Spanish lifestyle was a revelation. I grew fond of the siesta tradition, where life slows down during the hottest parts of the day. This shift allowed me to experience a sense of relaxation and reduced stress. I no longer felt compelled to check my phone or emails incessantly.
In the beginning, I anticipated a full year to recuperate from my burnout, yet here I am in my fifth year, still unbothered by memories of my corporate roles. Perhaps the incessant hustle isn't the human experience we should strive for; maybe we need to reconnect with nature and find balance in our lives.
As I reflect on my five years in Spain, I realize that I no longer crave designer items or lavish furnishings. My modest 23-year-old Smart car suffices. The adage "dressing up the feathers doesn't make you a chicken" resonates deeply; conforming to consumer expectations does not alter one's essence.
It's nonsensical to chase after consumerist ideals, and I find no joy in material possessions. I lead a life of simplicity, free from television and social media distractions. My time is spent intentionally, as noted by the writer Chuck Palahniuk: "This is your life, and it is ending one minute at a time."
It's time to disregard the hustling gurus who insist we must do more or be more productive; that's one of the greatest fallacies. True appreciation for life, ourselves, and others comes from a slower, more mindful pace.
The Western world continues to fall prey to the notion that wealth accumulation is paramount. In reality, all we truly need is shelter, nutritious food, good companions, and a good book. Everything else pales in comparison, so let's make the most of what we have!
Sipping my red wine while seated on the porch of my yurt, I soak in the serenity of the countryside. My thoughts drift back to my former life in America, filled with endless meetings and the relentless pursuit of success. It all seems trivial now.
As I observe the mountains, watching the wind weave through the canyons, I've realized that embracing a slower pace and savoring life's moments is a genuine luxury. I've come to cherish the natural beauty surrounding me and find joy in simplicity.
I chuckle at the thought of my previous colleagues witnessing my transformation; they might think I've gone mad. Yet, I know I've gained far more than I ever anticipated.
As the sun begins to set, I rise and stretch. I head inside to prepare dinner, the delightful aroma of fresh vegetables and herbs filling the air. Can you smell them?
