The Blessing of Community: Embracing Belonging Over Compromise

Chapter 1: Understanding Community Dynamics
The significance of community cannot be understated, particularly when it comes to fostering a sense of belonging. I’ve spent most of my life in the United States, but my upbringing as a Third Culture Kid (TCK) has greatly influenced my views on inclusion and diversity. My biracial Asian background also plays a role; many Asians inherently value community.
This brings us to the contrast between the “me” mentality and the “we” mentality. In my observation, particularly in Los Angeles, there is a strong emphasis on individualism, which can be traced back to Hollywood’s influence during my two decades there. Conversely, the “we” mentality celebrates the richness of community. It embodies a deeper sense of peace that comes from belonging to something greater than oneself.
“Community is composed of that which we don’t attempt to measure, for which we keep no record and ask no recompense. Most are things we cannot measure no matter how hard we try.” — Dee Hock
A friend once shared a Jewish philosophy that highlights this communal spirit: when a fire damages a house in a community, the response is not one of relief for one’s own safety, but rather, a shared sorrow, “Oh my goodness, I suffer with you.”
The need for community is rooted in both psychological and spiritual dimensions. It is essential for us to feel acknowledged and valued within a group where our lives are meaningful.
We also seek moral guidance, especially from a community that boasts diversity in age, gender, education, opinions, and ethnic backgrounds. Being surrounded by a variety of perspectives enriches our lives, even if that wisdom comes from the youngest among us.
When faced with challenging life decisions, having a supportive community to turn to can offer valuable insights. This explains why individuals often gravitate toward faith groups, social circles, or even gangs. Yes, gangs—historically, oppressed groups have formed their own tribes when they felt marginalized elsewhere.
The diversity within a community—encompassing age, gender, education, and ethnicity—brings unique qualities that benefit all members.
“All too often we think of community in terms of being with folks like ourselves: the same class, same race, same ethnicity, same social standing and the like…. We need to be wary: we need to work against the danger of evoking something that we don’t challenge ourselves to actually practice.” — Bell Hooks
Another vital aspect of community is the interconnectedness among its members. Just like trees of various shapes and sizes, communities consist of individuals who support and nurture one another.
Gathering as a community often involves rituals that serve as the glue binding diverse individuals together, fostering a sense of unity.
However, true community membership requires active participation. You shouldn’t be just an observer or someone who contributes minimally. Your voice is essential; it matters.
Growth within a community is a two-way street: as you evolve, you can also help others flourish by sharing your unique gifts and perspectives. Remember, you are not a passive participant; you are integral to the community's vibrancy.
Reflection Questions:
- Consider a community you are part of: What do you appreciate about it? What aspects might you dislike?
- How do you contribute to this community? Are there ways you could increase your involvement or, conversely, some activities you might reduce?
- In what ways do you experience a sense of belonging in your community? How does this shape your identity?
FINAL THOUGHTS:
Being involved in a community cultivates connection, belonging, inspiration, mentorship, wisdom, duty, love, and support. To thrive, you must engage actively. Use your voice, skills, and talents for the benefit of others.
