The Almost Death Drive: A Close Call on the Road

Written on

Chapter 1: A Dangerous Encounter

On the outskirts of Toronto, where Taunton Road intersects with Steeles, Saul Hennick was enjoying some tunes on Sirius XM. Suddenly, he spotted headlights rapidly approaching him in his lane.

His heart raced as shock set in. How could someone be barreling towards him? Panic surged through him; the road was narrow with steep drops on either side. As the vehicle approached, the dread of a head-on collision loomed over him. He had no intention of meeting his end due to someone else's reckless driving.

In a flurry of instinct, Saul flashed his lights, honked the horn, prayed, and decelerated. The SUV drew nearer, and he realized he needed to act fast. He searched desperately for a place to escape and spotted a ditch just ahead. He waited, hoping the other driver would correct their course, but it never happened.

With no time to spare, Saul veered off the road. His heart pounded as he attempted to stop, but the car skidded down the embankment uncontrollably. Miraculously, he avoided any rocks during the descent and landed at an angle at the bottom. Although shaken, he was alive.

Shortly after, he watched the errant vehicle zoom by, still heading the wrong way. Concerned for others on the road, Saul called 911 to report the incident. The operator assured him a cruiser would be dispatched soon and inquired about his well-being, promising a tow truck would follow.

Moments later, he heard the whir of a police helicopter overhead. A bright spotlight illuminated him, and he waved as it moved eastward—the direction from which he had come.

Before long, a police car arrived, lights flashing and sirens blaring. Saul climbed up the embankment, managing to pull himself out without assistance.

The officer, who introduced himself as McLintlock, towered over Saul. "There are some real idiots out there," he remarked, as he gathered information about the incident. Saul felt a flicker of relief when the officer informed him, "We've deployed a spike strip; we’ll catch the perpetrator. Your report may have saved lives tonight."

A short while later, McLintlock asked Saul to visit the police station the following morning to meet Detective Terwilliger. "If you arrive around nine, that would be perfect. Have a safe night," he said before jogging back to his vehicle.

It took another twenty minutes for the tow truck to arrive. The crew was impressive, skillfully maneuvering the car back up the slope without causing further damage. Saul offered them tips, and they expressed their gratitude, but he felt the most thankful. He drove home, relieved to be safe after such a nerve-wracking experience.

Once home, Saul did three things: he undressed, took a hot shower, and made a donation to charity, believing that giving back was a fitting way to express his gratitude for being alive.

Chapter 2: The Aftermath

The next morning, Saul arrived at the police station and requested to see Detective Terwilliger. After a brief wait, a tired-looking man in brown pants and a sports jacket approached him.

"Mr. Hennick, I'm Brian Terwilliger. Thank you for coming in. I just have a few questions," he said, leading Saul to a small room that felt reminiscent of an interrogation space.

"Can you recount what happened?" the detective asked.

Saul explained, "I was driving west when I saw headlights coming directly toward me in the eastbound lane. At first, I hoped he would merge back, but as he got closer, it became clear he was heading straight for me. I had no choice but to swerve off the road to avoid a collision."

Detective Terwilliger nodded, taking notes. "Thank you for your cooperation. We'll send you the crime report for your insurance," he said, standing up.

"Was the driver intoxicated?" Saul inquired.

"Yes, he was over the limit and claimed he didn’t realize he was driving on the wrong side of the road," the detective replied as they walked towards the exit. "He'll face serious consequences, including potential jail time."

As Saul left the station, the terrifying events of the previous night replayed in his mind. He was grateful to have escaped unharmed, reflecting on the countless lives lost to drunk driving.

For Saul, the image of the reckless driver would forever symbolize the epitome of foolishness. He couldn't shake the anger and disbelief that someone could be so careless. With those thoughts lingering, he pulled into the parking lot of his retail shop, "Super Cool Cannabis."

The first video, The Death Drive, delves into the psychological aspects of risky behavior on the road. It explores how the "death drive" can manifest in extreme situations, much like Saul's experience.

The second video, The Death Drive, Politics, and Love: A Conversation Between Todd McGowan and Julie Reshe, discusses the broader implications of reckless behavior, both on the road and in society. This conversation offers insights into how such actions can affect not just the individual, but the community as a whole.
